The power of rotation and cover crops When it comes to soil health, rotation and cover cropping are fundamental. Our agronomist Bobby Sandeman explains: "When you plant the same crop repeatedly, you deplete the soil and invite pests. By rotating crops and planting cover crops, the balance is restored." Cover crops do more than just fill space, they: - Enhance soil structure, - Provide habitats for pollinators, and - Reduce erosion Our farms are buzzing with life, thanks to carefully chosen plant species that enrich the soil and ultimately strentghen our flowers. 🌾 Cover Crops: Cover crops offer numerous benefits for soils and agricultural ecosystems. But what are the real advantages of this sustainable practice? Discover how cover crops can: Improve Soil Health: By adding organic matter, they enhance soil structure, increase water retention capacity, and enrich microbial biodiversity. Combat Erosion: By forming a plant cover that protects the soil surface, they reduce the risk of erosion caused by wind and water. Promote Biodiversity: They provide habitat for various beneficial organisms, contributing to a more balanced agricultural ecosystem. These practices play a key role in the sustainable management of agricultural operations, promoting more fertile and resilient soils. Have you integrated cover crops into your farming practices? What results have you observed? Share your experiences in the comments! #CoverCrops #SustainableAgriculture #Soil

November is National Native American Heritage Month! Today we are shining a light on two small business owners of Native American heritage: Brothers Kaben Smallwood and Shelby Smallwood - Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. Kaben and Shelby founded Symbiotic Aquaponic, which specializes in designing and implementing aquaponic systems—a unique fusion of aquaculture (fish farming) and hydroponics (growing plants without soil). Their systems operate in a closed, sustainable cycle where fish waste serves as a natural fertilizer for the plants, and the plants, in turn, filter and purify the water for the fish. This process creates a self-sustaining ecosystem that conserves water, minimizes waste, and produces fresh fish and crops in an eco-friendly way. Symbiotic Aquaponic works with a variety of clients, from individual hobbyists and educators to larger commercial and community projects. The company aims to promote sustainable agriculture practices, boost food security, and reduce environmental impact. By blending their expertise in farming, economics, and fabrication, Kaben and Shelby have built a business that not only champions sustainable food production but also empowers communities to adopt innovative agricultural methods. 🌳🌾 Did you know that integrating trees with crops and livestock through agroforestry can revolutionise agriculture by creating sustainable, productive, and resilient landscapes? Agroforestry can remove up to 0.31 billion metric tons of carbon annually, rivaling traditional forests, and currently holds up to 34 petagrams of carbon, equivalent to 20 years of deforestation emissions. In the U.S. alone, it can sequester as much carbon as removing 71-173 million vehicles from the road each year. Agroforestry offers numerous environmental benefits, such as preventing soil erosion, increasing biodiversity, improving soil health, and enhancing water quality. These systems create resilient agroecosystems that can withstand climate change impacts. Economically, agroforestry boosts crop yields, protects livestock, and diversifies farmer incomes, supporting rural communities. By fostering a rich diversity of organisms, it contributes to a sustainable ecosystem on farms. At Ideas From Europe, we aim to shift perceptions and incentivise adoption of agroforestry. Together, we can transform landscapes and contribute to a more sustainable future. #Agroforestry #ClimateChange #Sustainability #Biodiversity #SoilHealth #RuralDevelopment #SustainableAgriculture #CarbonSequestration #EcoFriendly #InnovationInFarming #GreenFuture 🌱🌍✨

Some realities were found out. Our previous reports agree that AF requires greater investment, especially in the early stages. However, if considering a long-term period, would a complex system always ask for a higher labor demand than a mono-crop system? Trees can be planted once for many years, similar to grass that is suggested to be replanted every 5 years (even farmers in Sonla, Vietnam have remained guinea grass for >10 years). We would need long-term experiments to make sufficient evidence for redesign and management plans.
Regenerative agriculture sounds fantastic on paper... until we start talking about labour. With not enough hands for the harvest and most farmers age 60+, how do we make it work? Here’s a little reality check on some practices: -Composting (1 ton): 6-9 days of work -#Agroforestry (60 trees): 4-5 days—think of it as planting a small forest -Vegetative barriers with vetiver: 200 meters planted/day (not too bad considering a potential 15% yield increase) -Mulching with #banana leaves: 2 hours -Terraces: 65-590 days/ha (depending on slope and soil conditions) - below a picture of Peruvian terraces that left me absolutely fascinated -Intercropping: from 3-4 days with corn to several weeks with vanilla (who doesn't love the delicate art of daily hand pollination?) The question isn’t which practices capture most #carbon, but which ones will farmers actually implement in a context of labour scarcity... difficult balance between ambition and reality. #RegenAg #Coffee #ClimateSmartAgriculture #CoffeeSustainability #SoilHealth #CoffeeSustainability

With agriculture being Hawaii's second largest commodity, the state is pushing to increase their tropical fruit production so they can be less reliant on importing tropical fruits. Umi Martin, a Kaua`i farmer, is trying different techniques such as the Ultra High Density technique to increase mango orchard yields on smaller acreages through a Western Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (Western SARE) grant. - Watch as Umi demonstrates these new techniques in an attempt to heal and sustain his local economy while utilizing less labor, increasing yields, and selling directly to his local market. - LD Productions and Western SARE couldn’t be more excited to share The Mango Loa Project and Umi Martin’s story, an organization that is supporting farmers and ranchers with the transition to more sustainable practices. - To learn more about Western SARE, visit www.westernsare.org - To view the film, visit https://lnkd.in/gTFQUf_E. - #regenerativeagriculture #regenag #regeneration #regenerativeranching #soilhealth #holisticmanagement #sustainablefuture #sustainability #sustainable #sustainablebusiness #sustainableliving #farming #ranching #biodiversity #farmland #ranchlands #ldproductions #climatechange #climatereality #landconservation #conservation
