💡 UNIC #EngagedResearch Spotlight 🌆 Engaged Students for Inclusive Cities In December 2023, an international workshop was organized on Campus Woudestein in Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam to promote an inter-organizational dialogue about engaged research. Led by Dr. Asya Pisarevskaya, the participants ranged from student-researchers and senior researchers at the EUR and the University of Liège (ULiège) to representatives of the Rotterdam municipality and anti-discrimination agency RADAR. During the workshop, opportunities and difficulties that lie in the mutual cooperation between municipality, social organizations and universities were discussed. Close listening and co-creation have proven to be of key importance in effective inter-organizational collaboration, so that policy can be based on local and academic knowledge which fit with the needs of broader society. The students gained insights on effective ways of acting and practical tools to be better engaged in their research. Additionally, the representatives from the city of Rotterdam have obtained valuable insights into their challenges in migration and diversity governance. ⚡ The international exchange of experiences between the two programs contributed to significant mutual learning - important work which will be taken forward in 2024! “Let’s get lost together- I know the way” was one of the quotes at yesterdays conference on transdisiciplinary science and innovation at Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam. transdisciplinary science and innovation is essential to help solving the wicked problems of todays society- but how to bring it into practice and how to enhance it? Thank you to ACDS Magazine, 'Australian University Science,' for featuring my journey from battling agricultural pests in #India to founding DNA Zoo #Australia in your latest issue. For me, the soul of science is about fostering curiosity and empowering communities. It’s about generating knowledge, not adhering to rigid frameworks. I've always refused to let myself be 'boxed in' by traditional disciplinary silos. Instead, I've found joy in collaborating with like-minded individuals, 'digging' into the mysteries of life. It's made all the difference and doing science super fun! However, I'm saddened to see universities shifting from a knowledge-driven model to one driven by prestige. Universities should be places for following curiosity, not chasing prestige. I never signed up for a race towards #H-index; it's not a great measure of a scientist's research impact. AAU is on a mission to shape the future. Today, I had the privilege of discussing the next Framework Program with Cecilie Brøkner from Innovation Fund Denmark and Director General for Research and Innovation Marc Lemaitre in Brussels. The complex challenges facing our societies demand a fresh scientific approach. Collaboration among policymakers, businesses, civil society, and scientists from diverse disciplines is crucial. It's about setting aside disciplinary boundaries and working together from the outset. As universities we must actively engage in partnerships, knowledge circulation, and interaction with society around us. This collaborative spirit is at the core of AAU's mission-oriented approach. I firmly believe that universities play a pivotal role in driving change and prosperity, and by prioritizing mission-oriented research, we align with the goals of the European Commission and pave the way for meaningful progress.
