The chief mate (first mate), second mate, and third mate are the several ranks of mates. The chief mate, often known as the first officer, is in control of the ship's deck department, which includes the deck crew and cargo. They are responsible for managing environmental protection, safety protocols, cargo operations, and navigation. Mates help in docking, oversee the deck crew, monitor the ship's location, rotate watches with the captain and other officers, and make sure the cargo is stored appropriately. They are essential to preserving the stability and safety of the ship, particularly while transporting dangerous materials. It is necessary to have at least a high school diploma or equivalent and additional training to become a mate. #mate #chiefmate #firstmate #shipdeck #deckdepartment #environmentalprotection #safetyprotocols #cargooperations #navigation #docking #watchrotation #shipstability #maritimesafety #navalarchitecture #marineengineering #marineengineer #sammarine #bunkersurvey #news #onhirebunker #offhirebunker #trustisthebeginning #maritimeindustry

Thought provoking report issued by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) today about the grounding of the 16m Channel Queen off the Needles last year. Lots and lots to unpick for the Small Commercial Vessel sector, including the old issues of commercial operation versus suitable manning, poor watch handover procedures and hours of rest issues due to new crew joining late at night and disturbing others. Most notably for me though is the voyage planning practices, how the vessel’s track was being monitored, and how crew resources were used to aid (or not) the overwhelmed bridge watchkeeper. I find it interesting that while paper charts were carried and the primary means of navigation, the MAIB chose to focus their findings on the use of the chart plotters, scales of charts views, lack of safety contour settings and use of track monitoring alarms. This is the “#digitalfirst” we hear so much about - the expectation is here that we should know how to implement these measures. The need for Small Commercial Vessel electronic navigation and bridge watchkeeping training is clearly shown here, as it is apparent that when it does go wrong, the standards you are held to are similar to that of a much larger commercial vessel, no matter how ‘dynamic’ you think the nature of your work is. https://lnkd.in/gx7N5i3K #maritime #yachtmaster #electronicnavigation #humanelement

“1000 Ways to Secure the Pilot Ladder, But Only One is the Correct by Arie Palmers” Ensuring the proper securing of the pilot ladder is a crucial part of maritime safety. Despite the variety of methods seafarers may use, there is only one method that truly meets international safety standards. ⚓️ Why it Matters: Improperly secured pilot ladders can lead to severe accidents and injuries. Compliance with IMO regulations (SOLAS) and other industry standards is essential for both the safety of pilots and the ship’s crew. 🛠️ Common Mistakes: • Incorrect use of securing points • Using insufficient materials for rigging • Not ensuring a stable landing area ✅ The Right Way: Follow the strict guidelines as per IMO Resolution A.1045(27), ensuring the ladder is properly secured with both ropes and shackles to the designated strong points of the vessel. Always double-check with the crew for safety confirmation before use. This attention to detail reflects the professionalism and responsibility of a seafarer! #MaritimeSafety #PilotLadder #SOLAS #IMO #Seafarers #SafetyFirst
