The Indo-Sri Lanka fishing dispute, fueled by historical, cultural and maritime boundary issues, has persisted since the 1990s. Despite bilateral discussions and initiatives, unresolved conflicts over poaching, overfishing and illegal methods pose legal, political and security challenges. Both nations must prioritise finding sustainable solutions and consider joint efforts for marine protection, as the protracted issue impacts their bilateral relations and traditional maritime security. In this issue of the South Asia Scan, Chulanee Attanayake, PhD Attanayake underscores the urgency for both countries to find a lasting and sustainable solution, possibly through joint efforts for marine protection. We were invited by AIDA (Asociación Interamericana para la Defensa del Ambiente) to a briefing on the High Seas Treaty (BBNJ) in Panama on May 16, along with representatives of the CMAR (Corredor Marino de Conservación del Pacifico Este Tropical) countries, and their foreign ministries. From Galapagos, Eliécer Cruz and Paola Sangolquí from Fundación de Conservación Jocotoco, Sarah Enright from the Charles Darwin Foundation, and Eddy Araujo from Galapagos National Park Directorate attended. During the event, we presented the preliminary results of the “Galapagos Expedition” with Greenpeace, and explained the legal perspective of the BBNJ Agreement, highlighting the importance of marine protected areas and the ratification of the High Seas Treaty. 90 countries have signed the Treaty, but to be in force, it must be ratified by at least 60 of them. So far, only 5 countries have completed the ratification process. We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this crucial discussion and look forward to continuing to collaborate in the protection of our oceans. For more information, we invite you to read Sarah’s blog, where she explains more information on the High Seas Treaty: https://lnkd.in/epMjCF7w 📷 Paola Sangolquí/Jocotoco Foundation #HighSeasTreaty #MarineConservation #OceanProtection #BBNJ #Galapagos #ConservationEfforts #SustainableOceans #ProtectOurOceans #MarineProtectedAreas #CollaborationForConservation
