New study: Are consumers still barking up the wrong (palm) tree? Insights into perceptions towards palm oil-related labels and claims: 🥪 ‘Free from’ palm oil claims are perceived as healthier and more sustainable. 🏷 Label heuristics are more influential to perceptions than environmental knowledge. 🔃 Perceptions of labels and claims do not always translate to products containing these. 🌴 Claim-related assumptions can undermine progress achieved in the palm oil sector. Francesca Matteucci Marieke Leegwater
🌴 My co-authors, Achim Spiller, Prof. Dr. and Gesa Busch, and I are happy to share our latest publication on palm oil-related labels and claims. 🌴 🚫 Spoiler alert: Many consumers think that a 'free from' claim makes a product more healthy and sustainable from the outset. This also applies to the 'free from palm oil' claim. https://lnkd.in/dHqnNdtJ

Alternative proteins are the new clean energy. Our food system is in need of a major upgrade to improve food security and safety, and environmental outcomes. Will Australia be a global leader or a global laggard? All we know is the rest of the world is not waiting around for us to make up our minds. "In August, bioengineers, chemists, plant biologists and food scientists based in China and Singapore came together in a closed hybrid conference with one ambitious goal: to unlock the massive economic and food-security promise of plant-based and cultivated meat." "The potential economic rewards are enormous, too. By 2050, the alternative-protein sector could generate some US$700 billion annually in economic growth4. But where those gains will go is still up for grabs."
