Let's take a moment to appreciate the invaluable rainforests of Malaysia and their vital role in sustaining life on our planet. Here are some eye-opening Malaysian rainforest statistics to ponder: 🌳 Malaysia is home to some of the oldest rainforests on Earth, with forests dating back over 130 million years. 🦜 These rainforests harbour an astounding diversity of plant and animal species, including approximately 15,000 species of flowering plants and 200 mammal species. 🌧️ Malaysian rainforests are critical for maintaining the region's water cycle, with around 60% of the nation's water supply originating from these forests. 🌱 Despite covering less than 1% of the Earth's surface, Malaysia's rainforests are estimated to contain up to 20% of the world's animal species. 💰 The economic value of Malaysia's rainforests extends beyond biodiversity, with industries such as timber, palm oil, and ecotourism contributing significantly to the country's economy. Let's pledge to protect and conserve these invaluable ecosystems for the benefit of both current and future generations. Together, we can make a difference! #FromNairenonTeam #Forest #Love #Future #Malaysia #Sustain #Protect #Ecosystem #WorldRainforestDay #MalaysiaRainforests #ConservationEfforts #Conserve #Nature #Environment #Peace #Economy #Business #Sustainability #Animal #Tress #Protection

Not my usual market research related post but, as someone who cares about the 'deep blue' and not just Deep Blue Thinking, this is an issue that's too important to ignore. The potential re-introduction of longlining in the Maldives presents serious risk to endangered species of sharks and rays (and also seems an incredible own goal given the reliance of the Maldivian economy on marine-focused tourism?! 🤷🏻♂️) If you have a second to spare, please add your name to the list of signatories... https://lnkd.in/eya8HgDq

Bangladesh is one of the biodiversity-rich countries in the world. The five broad types of ecosystems in Bangladesh are coastal and marine ecosystems, inland freshwater ecosystems, terrestrial forest ecosystems, hilly ecosystems and man-made homestead ecosystems. Haor (depressed land) wetlands are the most important natural ecosystem of Bangladesh and the Haor basin is known for its rich biodiversity. The largest Haor in Bangladesh is Hakaluki Haor which supports one of the largest inland fisheries in the country. The hill ecosystems cover around 12% of the country’s land area. There is an occurrence of wide genetic variations in plants and animals, both in wild and cultivated/domesticated states. The diverse agro-ecosystems of Bangladesh are rich in genetic resources of plants and animals. There are 6,000 varieties of rice known to have existed in the country.

The Maldives is a global leader in sustainable fishing practices, but recent discussions regarding the potential reopening of longline fishing in the Maldives pose significant social, economic and ecological risks. We urge the Maldivian government to consider the potential negative impacts of longline fishing: Social and health impacts: Longlining often leads to overfishing, reducing fish populations and affecting the livelihoods of communities that rely on sustainable, one-by-one fishing methods. Longline fishing also requires extended periods at sea, posing safety risks and potential human rights issues such as exploitation and modern slavery, all the while disrupting family and community life. In addition, bycatch often includes species with mercury levels dangerous for human consumption, which if sold and consumed, would pose significant public health risks and increase public health costs for the Maldivian population. Environmental Concerns: Longlines not only increase pressure on already-overfished tuna populations, but kill a wide range of non-target species and vulnerable animals, including sharks, turtles, manta rays, and seabirds, among the Maldives' most prized tourism assets. Longlines are often lost at sea, continuing to kill animals long after the fishing boats have left. In 2022, it was estimated that 740,000 km (about 460,000 mi) of longlines litter the ocean annually, endangering marine health and biodiversity. Economic losses: Tourism, the Maldives' main source of income, relies on healthy marine life and habitats. Longlining represents a de facto lifting of the longstanding shark fishing ban that has been instrumental in rebuilding the health of marine life in the Maldives. The potential depletion of shark, whale shark, turtle, manta ray, and seabird populations due to longline bycatch would diminish the Maldives' appeal as a tourism destination, significantly impacting the national economy. Continued support for traditional one-by-one fishing practices, such as pole-and-line and handline fishing, is crucial for the prosperity of local fishing communities and the long-term health of marine ecosystems. CHINA: Fujian County impresses tourists with hotel built in #aquaculture platform An aquaculture platform, with a hotel built in it, in east China's Lianjiang County, Fujian Province, has impressed tourists with comfortable accommodation conditions and fresh #yellowcroakers farmed just on the platform. Mintou No. 1 Aquaculture Platform, the latest tourism attraction of Lianjiang County, has a dining hall with over 100 seats, 25 rooms, and many other amenities for relaxation. They can also taste freshly caught yellow croakers, which are exactly farmed on this platform. "I tasted the yellow croaker this morning, and it tasted indeed fresher and more flavorful compared with others I have tried," said Xie Fei, a tourist. This floating hotel features an advanced aquaculture system, which combines sonar, optical, video technologies, and data analysis to manage deep-sea farming intelligently. The annual output of large yellow croakers of the platform is worth nearly 140 million dollars. Rapid delivery services by drone are also available, which could deliver fish to the provincial capital of Fuzhou, 70 kilometers away, within 45 minutes, ensuring the freshness of the fish. "The integration of #fishing and #tourism is unique. The business models we are familiar with are either completely for leisure, like cruise ships, or completely for fishing, like aquaculture platforms," said Xu Huang, general manager of Mintou's No. 1 Aquaculture Platform. Since July of last year, the platform has hosted over 5,000 visitors, added Xu. According to the Chinese Ministry of Natural Resources, the country's national marine tourism industry generated a value added of over 200 billion dollars in 2023, increasing 10 percent year over year. https://lnkd.in/dwRF8znY

Karnataka's Environment Minister, Eshwar Khandre, has directed the forest department to implement a temporary ban on trekking activities in forest areas that do not offer online booking options. This decision comes in response to a recent incident in the ecologically sensitive Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, where around 4,000 trekkers were seen at the Kumara Parvatha peak, drawing criticism from wildlife activists and conservationists. The trekking ban is scheduled to be effective from February 1 until standard operating procedures are established. In a letter to the principal chief conservator of forests, the forest minister expressed concern about the recent incident at Kumara Parvatha peak and emphasized that camping within the forest can harm its ecology and pollute the local waterbodies. He stressed the need to regulate activities like trekking. Currently, the forest department permits only 150 trekkers at each of the trekking locations managed by the Karnataka Ecotourism Board. Minister Khandre acknowledged the enthusiasm of trekkers but highlighted the importance of not negatively impacting the ecosystem. He pointed out incidents of trekkers leaving plastic waste, food, and bottles in the forest, which can harm wildlife. The temporary ban on trekking activities applies to all forest areas without existing online booking provisions. Additionally, the state government has a pre-existing ban on trekking from March to September due to forest fires and the monsoon season. . . . #TheTatva #TatvaNews #India #Karnataka #Forest #Ban #Wildlife #Plastic #Trek #Trekker #Trekking #Trend #Pollution #Bengaluru #Adventure #Activist #Earth #Ecosystem #Conservation

Abundance! 2033 🤸🏽♀️ Complexity & Simplicity 💙 Prevention 🫧 Writer-Journalist-Educator 💥 Abundanism.com
People ask me: how can we combine health and environment with a growing macro-economy? Well, that's called nature-based solutions nowadays. Restore nature and make it healthily productive for a local/regional economy and get extra income streams from exporting knowledge and recipes. Economy of scope. Interconnections with tourism, travel, and spreading out the pressure of mass over time and place. It's what we do with our project Peloponnese Living in Greece. And no, dear Greek officials, it's NOT about giving Dubai the license to explode fish farms everywhere along the coast and pollute the water with formaldehyde and copper. It's all about restoration and HEALTHY production. And because tourism is an important source of income for areas of natural beauty, we focus on spreading the mass pressure by redesigning the area and the economies.
