👍 Recommended reading: A review paper "War at Sea: Burn Care Challenges—Past, Present and Future" by Dr. Matthew Tadlock's team. Throughout history, seafarers have been exposed to potential thermal injuries during naval warfare; however, injury prevention, including advances in personal protective equipment, has saved lives. Thankfully, #burn injuries have decreased over time, which has resulted in a significant clinical skills gap. This paper reviews the mechanisms of thermal injury during routine naval operations and naval warfare. Lessons learned from various modern maritime mass casualty incidents are emphasized. What's on your #bookshelf? This seems to be the summer for naval literature. I started with "Fighting in the Dark," the incredible study of naval night fighting in the first half of the 20th century from Trent Hone and Vincent O'Hara, then graduated to "America's First Carrier," David Winkler's new book on the USS Langley at the dawn of naval aviation. Now I'm closing the book on "The Mighty Moo," Nathan Canestaro incredible new book on the journey of the USS Cowpens during the Second World War. The story of the #MightyMoo really begins at the end of 1942, at which time four of the US Navy's six "big" carriers had been sunk. As a stopgap measure, FDR ordered - against fierce objections from the Navy - that light cruisers under construction would be reconfigured as light carriers. They were smaller, to be sure, ungainly to a fault, top heavy with a shorter flight deck, and surprisingly survivable. Commissioned in May 1943, the #MightyMoo was a workhorse that fought in most of the major battles in the #Pacific but without achieving much of any distinction. She did what she was designed to do: fill a #critical #capability gap until replacement carriers could be brought on line. When she cruised into Tokyo Bay in 1945 (the first carrier to do so), it was because she was considered expendable... an acceptable risk at the time should events run a different course. The Mighty Moo was mothballed in 1946 and sold for scrap in 1960. An undignified end for a ship that served as well as she did. But Nathan Canestaro is here to preserve her memory, her #legacy, and her name. Grand Central Publishing

Like almost all agencies, the US Navy does a good job of buying and replacing old technology. Where the DoN, and most others struggle is how to sustain that application or system over the long term. Jennifer Edgin, the assistant deputy chief of naval operations for information warfare, said her office is leading a perspective shift to ensure technology is onboarded quickly and is always modernized. #itmodernization #govcon https://bit.ly/3uSKXAN

July 1953 at the old #SouthBoston Naval Annex, part of the #Boston Navy Yard, facing northwest. The photo shows fifteen aircraft carriers from the #USNavy Atlantic Reserve Fleet, with USS Leyte in the foreground, shortly before she was converted to an antisubmarine carrier. The other fourteen are small escort carriers built on modified cargo ship hulls. Most of the ships in the picture were less than ten years old, but the pace of technological change, the rapid transition to jet aircraft after WW2 and the dawn of the missile age meant that these ships were now thoroughly obsolete for their original purpose. Nevertheless, due to the Cold War, many of these ships were kept in reserve until the late 1950s. The Boston Navy Yard was established in 1801, mostly in #Charlestown. The South Boston Naval Annex was created in 1920. Boston Navy Yard as a whole closed in 1974, most of the dock space filled in, and converted to mostly warehousing space on several new streets including Seafood Way. Dry Dock No. 3 is still one of the largest drydocks on the east coast. #history #technology #engineering
