To Trondheim, where I come face to face with Rosenborg Ballklub's impressive young CEO Tore Bjørseth Berdal (and European Club Association (ECA) board member) to discuss the challenges of restoring one of European football's fallen dynasties back to glory. It is now six years since his club, Norway’s most successful, last lifted a league title (in the 1990s and 2000s they had a streak of 13 consecutive titles), and four since they last competed in the group stage of a European competition, income from which used to provide the bedrock of their dominance in the Eliteserien, Norway’s tops division. As well as slipping behind established rivals, such as Molde, more recently Rosenborg have fallen behind more nimble and focussed upstarts, such as Bodo/ Glimt, the tiny club from the Arctic, who have won three of the last four titles, and which Off The Pitch has named as one of Europe’s best-run clubs. Lack of on pitch success – Rosenborg finished last season ninth, their worst showing in 46 years – has fed a financial crisis at the Trondheim club. There have been player sales, staff redundancies and much soul searching. For Berdal the prognosis is simple. “To say it easily, our income has been lower than our expenses,” he says. “That's the easy answer. And then you can ask why.” How will he turn it around? Like many people, I’ve been enjoying the Olympic Games so far. My fingers are crossed that Great Britain beats Australia in the medal tally, or I’ll never hear the end of it! I was looking at comparisons between the Olympics and bidding and the obvious one that stuck out to me was pre-bid work. Every Olympic gold starts long before the games; it begins in the daily grind of training and preparation. Similarly, the foundation of a winning bid is laid well before the submission deadline. From understanding the client's needs to assembling the right team and aligning your strategy, every piece of pre-bid work is crucial. Like an Olympic athlete, a bidder's success is often determined long before the race is run. Higher, Stronger…Slower? Why the Paris Olympic Pool Has a Problem The Paris Games has produced a surprising lack of world records so far. Some think it may be because the pool is unusually shallow The pool constructed on the customary site of a rugby pitch measures 2.2 meters deep. At recent Olympics, the pool has always been around 3 meters deep—a difference of nearly 3 feet. To understand why that matters, it’s important to remember that swimming isn’t just a dynamic exercise. It’s also an exercise in fluid dynamics. Every movement swimmers make with their hands and feet creates small waves that rebound off the bottom of the pool. No movement has more potential for waves than swimmers’ initial dive into the water. The shallower the pool, the more those waves ricochet back to the swimmers on the surface, creating a more turbulent aquatic environment that isn’t conducive to top speeds. In the future, pools as shallow as the one at these Games won’t be allowed. World Aquatics enacted a minimum depth of 2.5 meters for swimming and water polo in January 2023. When Paris had its bid accepted for the Olympics in 2017 and the swimming facility was approved, regulations allowed for a pool of 2.2 meters.
