Some of the most successful people in the world are where they are because they’ve been lucky enough to have the right opportunities come their way. In the spirit of the Olympics, let's discuss Steven Bradbury OAM from the 2002 Winter Olympics. In the final turn, of the final lap, one of the other skaters faulted, slipped and took out the remaining three skaters, leaving Bradbury to come through for the win. It was a quintessential tale which was both inspiring and aligned with Australian humour. The name became synonymous with resilience, tenacity and a bit of luck. What the story rarely acknowledges is the amount of damned effort it takes to get into the final race, for a gold medal, in a sport that your country is not commonly known for. How many tens of thousands of hours of training did it take to get in that race in the first place?... To my mind it proves that we make our own luck. It wasn't luck that got him in that race in the first place. #personaldevelopment
