When Two Cineworld Cinemas Ltd Worlds Collide: “In July,Sky News learnt that the company, which until last year was listed on the London Stock Exchange was considering closing about a quarter of its roughly-100 British multiplexes. Cineworld also wanted to renegotiate rent agreements at a further 50 sites, with the remaining 25 untouched by the restructuring, according to Sky News. On Saturday, July 3, 2024, a notice was filed to confirm the end of the administration of the Company. The popular #cinema-chain #Cineworld is set to close its doors after the company confirmed it will be formally dissolved in three months’ time. As a result, the company has confirmed it will be formally dissolved on Thursday, October 3, 2024.” Two separate processes and not aligned in outcomes; but for the general public a great deal of uncertainty, negative news and a general lack of confidence in this silent, apprehensive yet highly volatile marketplace. #leisurepropertyESS https://lnkd.in/ebeSCpNS

U.K. Frequency Impact: “The boss of the UK Cinema Association (UKCA) has said that British cinemagoers are not being fed enough quality local movies to get them back to movie theaters with the frequency of the pre-Covid era. According to Phil Clapp most pre-Covid cinemagoers are now happy to check out movies at their local theater from time to time, but frequency is the issue. If an average person was going to the cinema six times per year before the pandemic, Clapp floated the notion that they would now be going three to four times” #cinema #leisurepropertyESS THE LEISURE PROPERTY FORUM Marathon Not a Sprint to Recovery and when quality films are released they most likely will be most popular at quality venues, and not the multiplex, which will further polarise market recovery. https://lnkd.in/eXKM82HR

Capital Investment into Cinema: ““Keeping pace with the increasing demands of the movie-going public is not new, but it does require capital. And to our friends in the financial industry, investing in the talented people that run the innovative theatres across this country and the world is a smart investment. Getting more capital into the system will benefit everyone — creatives, studios, exhibition, local communities and, most importantly, movie fans” Michael O'Leary National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) #cinema #leisurepropertyESS Capital will return to the market selectively and as part of a restructuring intervention to reset the mature markets from survival to revenue growth. Trust & Confidence in Cineworld Cinemas Ltd: "Ben Shaw KC, for The Crown Estate and UKCP, said there would be 'adverse consequences' for the landlords if the leases were subject to restructuring plans. including receiving just one month's rent. He said: 'One of the things they bargained for was the plan companies not coming back for a second bite of the impairment cherry. What the plan companies promised not to do is precisely what they are now doing" #cinema #leisurepropertyESS https://lnkd.in/exCU_CgF

For fans of cinema, 2023 would have largely been viewed as a success. #Barbie and #Oppenheimer saw floods of fans heave into theatres in numbers which had not been seen since the pandemic. Writers’ strikes may have halted the release of some hotly anticipated titles, but a strong pipeline of films in the second half, as well as a rise in the popularity of concert films, kept theatres busy and moviegoers engaged. For investors in cinema, 2023 was a repeat of the years before… a failure. Retail investors who had bought shares in #Cineworld, one of the only London-listed #cinemastocks , would have closed the year out penniless after the company fell into administration and shares were delisted as part of a restructuring plan. #AMCEntertainment, the US cinema chain which also owns Odeon, lost around 90% of its market value.
