Evil Geniuses and Golden State Warriors’ esports division Golden Guardians are leaving the LCS in League of Legends Esports. This comes after the termination of the two teams’ third-party administrator agreement with Riot Games and has been confirmed by John Needham, President of Esports at Riot. This means the LCS will be an 8-team league, which Riot says “will allow us to be much more flexible” for league restructuring purposes. According to Needham, Golden Guardians decided to focus more on their basketball operations while Evil Geniuses supposedly had difficulties of their own in leadership and treatment of players. The other 8 teams reaffirmed their commitment to the league, and the announcement comes a day before the start of free agency period which means hopefully players and staff of EG & GGS will have time to find a new team (though this might not be the case). Perhaps the LCS will see two new member teams in the next season or new formats for the league. Regardless, fans will not be seeing Golden Guardians or Evil Geniuses in the LCS this year. Mark, the LCS landscape is indeed shifting and such changes can represent both challenges and opportunities within the esports industry. For those managing teams or the business side of esports, integrating Generative AI could be a game-changer for strategising and optimising operations during such transitions. AI can provide predictive models on game outcomes, assist in scouting talent, and tailor content for fan engagement. For businesses looking to navigate this, a tool like Futurum could aid in staying ahead of the curve by organising communication efforts and creating adaptable strategies for the evolving esports environment.

Esports is a wild ride. This decision makes sense, but I can't imagine how many more layoffs there'll be as teams continue to cut costs, pivot, and leave franchises / titles. Hoping for some recovery in 2024 🙏
