THE DEFINITION OF A TEAM Jessica Abner is the Administrator at Taylor's Pointe in Cincinnati, Ohio. Bo West is her Director of Human Resources. Bo has the Foundations Core Value posted outside of her office and on new hire orientation Jessica goes in and discusses them and the Foundations Culture of Care. Jessica tries really hard to incorporate our Core Values and Culture of Care into the daily life at Taylor's Pointe. Bo shared with Jessica that last Monday when I came into a puddle of water in her office, Everlyn, the new STNA without even being asked jumped right in, got some towels and helped her clean it up. Rich does a little of everything, Maintenance, Floor Tech, Housekeeping and Laundry. Rich has a really good rapcore resident and staff throughout the building. When someone isn't happy about something they usually reach out to Rich if they can't resolve it on their own. Rich simply has a gift, he takes the time to listen, he is patient, he is committed to resolve the problem no matter how big or small or how much time it takes. He's a living example of our Culture of Care. Pictured below from left to right is: Everlyn, Jessica, Rich and Bo. It takes a team to make things happen and with mutual respect and a passion to make a difference things get accomplished, and everyone loves being a part of the team. 🎉 Celebrating 3 Years with Age UK Bath & North East Somerset! 🎉 Today marks my 3 year anniversary with Age UK Bath & North East Somerset. The time has flown by but I wanted to take some time to reflect on this milestone, share a few highlights and lessons learned along the way. 🌟 Highlights: • Impactful Projects: Over the past three years, I’ve had the privilege of working on several projects that have made a real difference in our community. From our Digital Inclusion Project to the development of our Memory Groups to providing Home from Hospital support right across our Bath & North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Integrated Care System but crucially working with multiple partners as part of the Community Wellbeing Hub (BANES) and seeing the myriad of positive outcomes has been incredibly rewarding. • Amazing Team: I am fortunate to be surrounded by a very talented and dedicated team. We employ over 80 people at Age UK Bath & North East Somerset and their support, creativity, and camaraderie have been and continue to be a constant source of inspiration. • Personal and Professional Growth: This role has pushed me to grow in ways I never imagined. This has been my first job as Chief Executive. I'll be honest it has been a steep learning curve. I've had to develop my leadership skills, challenge my own leadership stereotypes and expand my knowledge in multiple areas. This has been made a much more enjoyable experience with the support and guidance of my Chair and Board. 💡 Lessons Learned: 1. Embrace Change: The only constant is change. 2. Stay Curious: Continuous learning and curiosity are key. 3. Build Relationships: Strong relationships are the foundation of any successful team and community. Investing in connections with colleagues, partners, and stakeholders has been invaluable. 🚀 Looking Ahead: As I look to the future, I’m excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. They planned the party without ‘HR’, and I loved every moment of it. Three weeks before Christmas, I received an unexpected call from one of our admin staff. They had planned an end-of-year get-together for all staff and was inviting me to speak on ‘Cultural Intelligence: An Essential Skill for Career Advancement.’ For a moment, I was stunned. Staff had planned a party all by themselves, games, décor, music. Was I to be excited or concerned? Isn’t this supposed to be the other way around? On Christmas eve, I walked into the hospital, ready for my session but completely in awe of what I saw. They had gone all out, designing and decorating an area for the party, organizing games, and creating such a joyful atmosphere. It reminded me of the Annual Staff Awards and Party we held a few months ago. During that event, the management and HR team had taken time to celebrate and appreciate the incredible work our staff do daily. So seeing them now take the initiative to plan something for themselves felt like a beautiful continuation of that spirit of recognition and togetherness. As I sat down to soak in all I saw, my heart screamed, ‘YES, this is HR done well! (It was truly encouraging)💃💃 Because, 1. It reflected ownership: The staff felt empowered and cared for enough to take the initiative. 2. It showcased community: Beyond work, they created a space to celebrate one another, a clear sign of a strong culture. 3. It affirmed our HR vision: The well-being of employees is not just something we talk about; it’s a lived experience they feel and embody. Next year, I will make sure they are pampered in return because they truly deserve it😁. But this moment? It showed me that the seeds we are planting for an inclusive and supportive workplace are truly growing. To the amazing staff of Charis-Med Hospital, thank you for the joy you bring to work and the care you show one another🤗 How are you creating spaces where employees feel valued and empowered to take the lead? Did you know I used to be an Air Marshaller? 🤔 You know. The person who signals the pilot and help guide the plane to the air bridge safely for passengers to deplane and board their next flight. 🛬 Why is that important today? And, how does it relate to senior living? 🧐 Planes are HUGE! And…I am vertically challenged…😬 Let’s just say I still throw in the 3/4 of an inch to my height when I’m answering the question about it 😏 I equate the plane to the senior living industry and the Air Marshaller to the new upcoming residential assisted living home owners and independently owned senior living operators. They are growing in numbers! Rapidly. Slowly picking up the overflow of need and becoming communities of choice for families… ✅They are full…with a waitlist… ✅They are private pay…at the same rate… ✅They are filling the need of personalization of care…and providing families with options… How do I know? I talk to them daily. 👩🏽💻 One collaboration group in a single state started only a year ago. And, today already have over 11K members. That is in one state alone. 😱 So while larger communities are debating whether to change that carpet, how to hire & retain more staff, and what to do about management turnover… The smaller guys are taking more and more of the market share. They are guiding the plane into a different gate providing a bridge for many families to connect to senior living. And, I am here for it 🙋🏽♀️ Training, coaching, and strategizing with them. 🚨I am also sounding the alarm. Defending and claiming “foul” when there are ample opportunities for change will not win the hearts and minds of the consumer. If you have ever spent time with me out and about you know I like connecting and getting to know new people. On Sunday I traveled down to the St. Pete area for work and while watching my beloved Buffalo Bills I met some locals who are in their 70s. That may be an odd descriptor to include, however, it is relevant to this story. I was invited to come back to the same beach bar last night to join them for Trivia Night. What I experienced last night was a moment that highlights exactly why senior living communities are an incredible living option. There were drinks, there were laughs, there was brain power (recalling history, films, music, and more), and most importantly there were connections. Many of the people in attendance have been going to this Trivia Night for many years. For some people it is trivia that brought them together and now they are close friends. Many look out for one another in different ways from tech support to daily check-ins. What I observed was senior living without walls. Does this put us out of business? No. It gives us opportunity. It supports that what we offer is desired. Here is another opportunity....number one question asked of me this week by many of my new friends...."What's it really like in one of those places?" Simple to answer...."Look around at what we are doing right now." Senior Living Engagement peers.....TRIVIA NIGHT IS WHERE IT'S AT! Get a professional to come in and facilitate it. Tell Sales and Marketing so they can include prospects. Tell residents to invite their friends. Tell Dining to have a fun drink special (and yes charge for those drinks). Boost your brain, boost your bonds, boost your brand, boost your bottom line. I'll step off my soapbox now. But only for a moment. 🕑 As I mark two years at THIRTY4/7 Communications, I was asked to give my thoughts on how planning and politics has changed in that time: 🗳 'Since I started at T47, the political landscape has changed significantly. We have had three UK prime ministers, two monarchs, two first ministers of Wales and Scotland respectively, Welsh local elections, and two (nearing three) sets of English local elections. And if that weren’t enough, we are months away from a general election which might lead to a change of government for the first time since 2010. 🏗 The election will take place with both major parties having swapped positions on planning and development. Previously, under Boris Johnson’s government, the Conservatives placed growth at the heart of their economic agenda, pledging to ‘Level Up’ the nations and regions with investment and infrastructure. Johnson himself also championed the need to ‘build better and build greener but…also build faster’. In response, Keir Starmer’s Labour Party then warned voters that ‘The Conservatives’ developers’ charter would sell off and sell out our communities.’, in an appeal to those concerned at the prospect of overdevelopment. 🏡 Come 2024, and the position of both parties has reversed. Rishi Sunak has sounded a more cautious note around development, notably ditching national housing targets and watering down net zero legislation. Keir Starmer, on the other hand, has placed economic growth at the heart of his programme for government, with commitments on undertaking planning reform, achieving 100% clean power by 2030, and delivering 1.5 million new homes across the next Parliament. Starmer even recently acknowledged that Johnson’s policy had ‘struck a chord’ with voters, conceding that ‘Levelling-up is a good ambition for Britain’ and committing to delivering the policy in its totality. 🗣 Politics, after all, is driven by competing coalitions of voters and certain fluidity is to be expected, though with Labour anticipated to form the next government, perhaps there is growing evidence that voters wish to see growth and development at the forefront of the policy debate.' #politics #policy #development #Keir #Starmer #Boris #Johnson #Rishi #Sunak #Labour #Conservatives #communications
