Lots of eye opening for me at #luckyleaf minneapolis this last weekend. Top level observations: impressed with some of the startups (special kudos to Terpwolves) who really seem to have business plans together. Troubled however in the lack of information and continued discontinuity in rulemaking and licensure. We need this information ASAP. I know the OCM is trying, but time is running out. I was particularly dismayed from the scuttlebutt that OCM is going to largely depend on out of state labs moving in to support the industry. Flies in the face of the idealism of a craft industry, and threatens the system given the wide range data falsification seen in states with the mega-labs. We have a strong biotech and chemical industry here and there is no reason we can't build a local structure the cooperates with the state reference lab instead of trying to deceive it. Why do we want to ship that revenue out of state?

There's a lot of stuff that goes on behind the scenes at the BattleLab, and it's not hidden because of a veil of secrecy; it's mostly hidden because people are so determined to get projects, innovation and collaboration going; it's simply challenging to communicate coherently. We also don't want to give people false hope. We know that most innovation efforts fail for various reasons, so we tend not to communicate until we have something tangible and worthwhile. Rest assured, tremendous efforts are ongoing to implement the vision of an all-encompassing innovation and collaboration facility and continue to grow our offer. The early mist and fog are seeing signs of clearing. #battlelab #DorsetCouncil #future #ministryofdefence #innovation

I've been formulating a theory around when a govcon startup should really put pedal to the metal and enter a growth stage- and that's after it exits it's small business size governed by NAICS codes. Why? The gov space requires you to vault immediately to mid-sized company (IE from say $25M revs to $100M revs) - or else risk irrelevance. Depending on the NAICS you are in, the revenue amounts vary. This is the nature of the industrial base today. I was in a meeting at West Conference- with senior reps from Dept of Navy - and the small businesses that ranged from $5M to $50M were raising these issues. Today, I'm confronted by this reality in the work we do at BMNT - our Labs Accelerator- where we are helping companies (smalls) reach the next level. Maybe it's at this point that companies raise significant capital - get a series B for example - so they can go buy up, merge to the revenues that then make them stable ....IF they want to play the Gov Con game. Thoughts? Please comment. BMNTH4XLabs

Dual use and defense tech: what's the difference? by Nicola S., Founder and General Partner at Twin Track Ventures. 👇 Why it matters.👇 Understanding the nuances between deeptech, defence tech, and dual use is crucial for founder-investor fit and efficient communication. Early Silicon Valley startups with defence links highlight the historical significance of dual use. Today, some argue VCs hide behind dual use, avoiding offensive tech funding. However, many dual use investors leverage sector expertise to balance returns and national security. Deeptech encompasses high technical risk tech, dual use serves both commercial and national security sectors, and defence tech spans consumer to deeptech with military applications. Clarity in these terms helps VCs and LPs align on impactful investments. Read the full article on EUVC Insights. 🔽 https://buff.ly/3zvO83m #venturecapital #startupfunding #Europe #EUVCInsights

Last week had a chance to join EWOR Grand Pitch - online demo day where 10 EWOR fellows pitched to over 250 investors. Very well organized event, with solid pitches and on point follow-up conversations with the founders and other investors in the break out rooms. Kudos to the team who organized and thanks for having me! To highlight a few: - Luke Ferris from OriginAI where they're enabling business users to build complex enterprise tools without developer or product team input using GenAI. - Max Osborne from ThisThat, a challenger marketing data company where they're re-defining Brand Lift. Check EWOR's recent post if you want to see the decks (investors only). #vc #startup #investment #opportunities

…Let the dialog begin! Thank you, Jacqueline Tame and colleagues for your tireless effort to shed light on the “say vs. do” gap and what that means for all stakeholders in the #defensetech ecosystem. For those of us on the #founder side of the equation that are either contemplating entering the #valleyofdeath, currently “slogging” through it, or starting to scale the other side, I highly recommend the #NATSEC100 report. It may not be a comfortable read, but it is an essential one.
National Security Professional | Emerging Tech Advocate | Policy Innovator | Founder - GAMECHANGER, GAMEBREAKER.AI
The last few weeks have been at once exhausting and exhilarating. We at the Silicon Valley Defense Group released our second annual #NATSEC100 report which we previewed with our partners at the JPMorganChase #VETVC Summit in New York following a rousing discussion with key government and industry partners - all friends and #veterans; we hosted a webinar with experts from the #startup ecosystem, #privatecapital community, and #government, held two #policy salon dinners, and have had countless conversations - virtually and in person - about this year's list, our report, and what it all means for the state of the ecosystem. I am heartened by and so proud of the conversation that this has sparked--exactly as intended. But the most poignant moments for me, these last few weeks - those I will always remember most vividly about this time - have been in the #mentorship conversations I've been able to have with a whole host of young, incredible #talent that have come on the periphery of and punctuated each of these events. These moments, these conversations, these young people are what give me hope and confidence that the country and our #emergingtechreadiness ecosystem is in the best possible hands. Specifically, it was the catch up call with Harshana Ghoorhoo who I began mentoring after she reached out to me COLD on LinkedIn when I was at the DoD Joint Artificial Intelligence Center and she was studying #AI in #warfare, who is now killing it at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law; it was the follow-up conversation with a new friend and unbelievable patriot, Danielle Regis after we were introduced at Second Front Systems' #Offset Symposium this year; it was thinking through how to visualize the types of ecosystem maps that #natsec startups and #VCs need desperately, with two of the most absolutely brilliant young minds - Bronte Munro and Merritt Ogle; it was having two different dinners on opposite coasts and talking - at each - about the perpetual realities of the #Title10/#Title50 divide with EK Kinghorn on one coast and Faith Zehfuss on the other; it was (finally) meeting and sitting down with Bailey Baumbick because Joshua Himes said I should (and boy was he right); and it was the countless, near-hourly conversations and debates I was privileged to have with Dylan Serrentino-Mullins, Simone Montandon, and Christina O. as we worked to finalize and release the report. I owe every part of the privileged career I have had to date to my incredible mentors, sponsors, and champions. To get to pay even a small fraction of that forward to these (and many other) unbelievable humans endeavoring to continue to protect our freedoms and underwrite our security is - to me - the part of the job that really matters.
