A massive compromise of our health information is an understatement. Long term impacts have yet to be realized. Our industry has lacked payer accountability (especially with respect to subsidiaries). Undoubtedly this will impact how we conduct future business in healthcare. As the industry navigates through this challenge it's crucial that we prioritize patient care while also implementing stricter security measures to prevent future attacks. "The AHA found that about 94% of hospitals have felt a financial impact from the attack, and more than half have reported a "significant or serious" impact. Seventy-four percent of hospitals have reported a direct effect on patient care. Optum introduced a temporary funding assistance program for providers struggling with cash flow after the attack. To date, the company has provided more than $6 billion in advance payments to providers. "

#HIPAAbreachreports filed on the HHS Breach Portal may be amended as the breach report form allows a filer to file an initial breach report or an addendum to a previous report. The initial placeholder Change Healthcare filed listed about 500 impacted not the 100+million that were likely impacted. When they will amend report with real numbers expect HHS OCR will also update its public portal to reflect the new figures. The portal will be updated but it might not appear at the top of the list, which maintains reports in chronological order thereby potentially makes it easier for the updated breach figure to get buried on the HHS OCR public portal. https://lnkd.in/eB6fqxaG

About 5 weeks ago, Change Healthcare experienced a massive #cyberattack. Change’s platform touches about one-third of all patient records processed annually. To limit the impact, Change immediately disconnected its systems, and as a result, hospital systems were not able to send or receive claims information through Change’s clearinghouse platform. In a new article, Lisa Goldstein, Robert Turner, and Tommy Esposito outline the impact of this cyberattack and what we can learn from the incident. #healthcaremanagement https://lnkd.in/gkj8p474

Have you ever heard this expression? “An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure?” Seems appropriate for the healthcare space; right? I can’t help but think of this saying when we learned, earlier today, that Change Healthcare paid a $22 Million ransom to stop a data leak which happened because they didn’t use Multi-Factor Authentication. I’m planning on dropping a long-form article on this later, but here’s a sneak preview: MFA costs about $3 per user / month on average. Change Healthcare paid a $22 Million ransom. Even if they had 1,000 users, at $3 per user /mo, it would take over 661 YEARS(!) of paying for MFA before they would have spent $22M. They could have protected themselves through the year 2635 with that money. 💧An ounce of prevention: $3 per user / mo 🪣A pound of cure: $22,000,000 ransom If you’re going to do DaaS (which you should), do DaaS right! Enable MFA! More to come…
