Medium density and infill housing solutions are all around us. It isn't that hard! https://lnkd.in/g9W-isMb #affordablehousing #mediumdensity #infillhousing #housing #architecture #housingcrisis
Drawing inspiration from across the globe we are continuing our study of different medium density & infill housing typologies, and recently came across terrace housing development ‘Woodside Mews’ by UK based firm TAS Architects. Awarded the RIBA East Award in 2021, this is a great example of a clever and subtle infill development on a difficult site and delivered within a tight budget.

'Life beyond the facade', a review by Simon Henley of Costa's Barbers designed by Brisco Loran Architects has been published in the March edition of the RIBA Journal. The retail-to-residential conversion on Battersea High Street by Brisco Loran and Duncan Blackmore for Arrant Industries provides a home and office for the practice. Despite its humble scale, the project invites "ideas about the city, about conventions of use, public and private, social and domestic space, and about forms of practice and its impact on the environment." The article concludes: "Just imagine a high street full of this type of building, and a city full of this kind of high street, and the vitality, fluidity and ambiguity that could bring to our public and private lives." Balancing Progress and Heritage: Can Streamlined Planning Keep Melbourne’s Character Intact? Jamal’s team is #advocating for streamlined planning approvals to address Melbourne’s urgent #housingcrisis, but what about preserving the city’s unique charm and heritage? Melbourne’s identity and appeal on the world stage are tightly woven with its historic architecture and vibrant character. Jamal explains that #streamlining approvals doesn’t mean compromising on quality. By ensuring developers #collaborate with the #council to adhere to good design guidelines, Melbourne can maintain its architectural integrity while quickly addressing housing needs. With experts like Michael Smith leading the council, the #goal is to balance swift development with respect for Melbourne’s iconic heritage. Jamal Hakim #melbourne #australia #inspirepreneurmagazine

Brian and I could be considered boomerangs with this move... So excited for this next chapter. For almost 17 years, Studio C has been working incredibly hard for and with our clients to help them achieve their own successes and that of those whom they continually serve so tirelessly. We're now so happy to re-join MG2 as it will help us to serve more people more rigorously, with the same intent and passion as we've always had on our projects. This is supposed to be harder than this. Typically, when an acquisition like this takes place, there are so many hurdles to overcome. How do we build trust within the group? How do we keep serving our clients the way that they need? How do we merge our ways of doing EVERYTHING? How do we do all of this while simultaneously ELEVATING our service in all areas? As many of you know, both Brian and I are MG2 alum. The foundations of what we've been doing all these 17 years is largely based on what we learned at the MG2 back then. While much of the technology and infrastructure in the firm may be different for us, "why" we do things and "what" we're attempting to achieve are very similar. We speak that same language on everything, which frankly is an incredible time saver. This is supposed to be harder than this but we're already focused on elevating everything that we do. Such an exciting time.
Introducing MG2’s New Portland, Oregon Office! MG2 has acquired the Portland-based, affordable housing-focused architecture firm Studio C. “We are excited to welcome Jim Walker, AIA and Brian Bennett, AIA to MG2,” says Mitch Smith, MG2 CEO and Chairman of the Board. “Their strength in project design, understanding of building systems and experience in complex problem-solving will be invaluable. Their expertise, combined with their passion for affordable housing, is a perfect complement to our firm.” MG2’s new Portland office is the firm’s seventh location after Seattle, New York, Washington D.C., Minneapolis, Irvine, and Shanghai. One of my favourite things about this Pollard Thomas Edwards project is how repeatable it is. Terraced buildings are arranged to form streets and garden squares reclaimed from leftover and unloved estate spaces. No towers needed and it’s straightforward construction with few bells and whistles. The only buildings replaced were the few the residents wanted to see go. We think this is the formula that could provide homes on brownfield sites in countless towns and cities across the uk. If you have a potential sIte please get in touch and we can explain how we do it differently. (looks simple but there’s a knack to it 😉)
We were delighted to be shortlisted for the RIBA Neave Brown Award this year - all the more so given it is our 50th birthday too. Alas, we didn’t win. And there’s no hardship in missing out when the winner is as good as Chowdhury Walk by Al-Jawad Pike! As we’ve said before, this gong is the most consequential architecture award in Britain – it celebrates the most important ‘type’ of architecture the country needs right now – so even being shortlisted really makes our efforts in the social housing sector all the more worthwhile. Especially as we started in 1974 by refurbishing and converting terraced housing into flats for social housing tenants. We’d like to thank our client, Islington Council, and especially Alistair Gale, the council’s Head of Programming, Design and Customer Care, who did a brilliant job of engaging our residents to co-design their future homes with us. Of course, huge, huge thanks and even bigger congratulations must go to PTE partner Charina Coronado and our now-retired colleague, former partner Tricia Patel, who together designed and delivered this exemplar project. And a very special thank you to all of Dover Court’s residents and neighbours – for co-designing their homes, and for putting up with the disruption a project of this size invariably entails. Finally, here’s to all of our valiant competitors: Alison Brooks Architects, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCBStudios), Gort Scott, Page\Park Architects and AL-JAWAD PIKE - it was a privilege to have our work considered alongside yours. https://lnkd.in/g-gSgMC?

Further reflections from P+HS Architects, this time from our Residential Leads (including yours truly) on 40 years of designing exemplar schemes in the residential sector. Highlighting how the sector has evolved to cater to residents requirements, continually striving to address the housing crisis and how we as a practice have been at the forefront of innovation when facing these challenges. #oneteam #enhancinglives #ambitious #progressive #proudofourreputation #residentialdesign
