Maternal Mental Health not only encompasses access to perinatal mental health treatment, it includes the right of every person with a uterus to have access to reproductive rights. Without protecting access to education, contraception, and abortion, we CANNOT affect the devastating statistic that the US ranks below all developed nations in maternal mental healthcare. A nation who purports to be most powerful among all, is just a propaganda machine when it fails to care for the basic needs of ALL mothers and children- the leading cause of death for all women, within the first 12 months of giving birth, is by suicide, and overdose.
THANKYOU Breana Lipscomb for your work as a warrior, advocating for reproductive rights- BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS- your efforts reflect what is incumbent on our country to allow equitable healthcare to all of its citizens, and to turn the tide on the ravages of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders on women, their families and the Nation as a whole.
In the words of other social justice warriors, Sweet Honey & The Rock, “We who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes.”

This #BlackHistoryMonth, we’re highlighting the work of some outstanding Black leaders in the reproductive rights and justice movements, both within and beyond the Center. Our first feature goes to our very own Breana Lipscomb, acting lead of our US Human Rights team and a powerhouse advocacy strategist.
At the Center for Reproductive Rights, Breana uses a human rights framework to promote Black and Indigenous maternal health. She mobilizes a broad base of stakeholders—policymakers, reproductive justice advocates, and public health and medical professionals—to advance state and federal policies that further reproductive rights as human rights. Breana also serves on the Board of Directors for the Black Mamas Matter Alliance, Inc. (BMMA) and SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective, and she was recognized as the inaugural Kira Johnson Advocate of the Year by March for Moms in 2020.
