Center for Reproductive Rights

Law Practice

The Center for Reproductive Rights uses the power of law to advance reproductive rights as fundamental human rights.

About us

For over 25 years, the Center for Reproductive Rights has used the law to advance reproductive freedom as a fundamental human right that all governments are legally obligated to protect, respect, and fulfill. Since 1992, our attorneys have boldly used legal and human rights tools to create this world. We are the only global legal advocacy organization dedicated to reproductive rights, with expertise in both U.S. constitutional and international human rights law. Our groundbreaking cases before national courts, United Nations committees, and regional human rights bodies have expanded access to reproductive healthcare, including birth control, safe abortion, prenatal and obstetric care, and unbiased information. We influence the law outside the courtroom as well, documenting abuses, working with policymakers to promote progressive measures, and fostering legal scholarship and teaching on reproductive health and human rights. We are legal innovators seeking to fundamentally transform the landscape of reproductive health and rights worldwide, and have already strengthened laws and policies in more than 50 countries. Help us realize every woman's right to reproductive health and autonomy.

  • Medicaid is the only way 72 million people can afford to get the health care they need. Federal law doesn't allow states to interfere with Medicaid patients’ access to the qualified family planning providers of their choice. But this week, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear a case that could deny patients' power to sue for the right to see their chosen sexual and reproductive health care provider.

  • President Trump's latest assault against lawyers threatens the fundamental rights of every person in America. His goal is to bully lawyers out of taking on any case that challenges the administration, leaving everyday Americans with no recourse to fight back when fundamental freedoms—including their reproductive rights—are violated. We must not let that happen. In the President’s 60+ days in office, his administration has been sued more than 130 times with numerous injunctions already in place. This attempt to stop lawyers from holding the administration accountable is a direct threat to the rights and freedoms of everyone in America, as well as an affront to the justice system. The legal profession must stand firm. With fundamental freedoms under threat, we will NEVER back down.

  • Our client, Lauren Miller, needed an abortion to save her life and the life of one of her twins. But Texas’s cruel laws forced her to travel out of state at one of the most vulnerable moments of her life—even though her doctors were ready and able to provide the lifesaving care she needed. Now, Lauren is speaking out against several proposed laws in Texas: ➡️ Senate Bill 31 pretends to "clarify" the state’s abortion ban but actually opens the door for extremists to revive 160-year-old laws that could criminalize people who have had an abortion or have helped someone get one out of state. ➡️ Senate Bill 33 adds even more barriers to care by targeting governmental entities and employees who help people who need to leave the state to access abortion care. ➡️ Senate Bill 2880 harshly goes after medication abortion, companies that host abortion information online, and people or funds that pay for abortion care, even when that care is received out of state. Thank you, Lauren, for taking a stand against these disgusting bills. Now, it’s time for EVERYONE to stand up and get loud, too.

  • Abortion bans prevent doctors from giving their pregnant patients the care they need, even in medical emergencies. Last time we checked, the WHOLE POINT of medical school was to train providers to assess patients' health and help them understand their options to keep them safe. Why on earth are we allowing politicians and bureaucrats to interfere? Health care is a human right. Abortion is health care. LET DOCTORS PRACTICE MEDICINE!

  • 🚨🚨🚨Yesterday, the President issued a striking memo threatening lawyers who take legal actions against his administration. This is an attempt to stop lawyers from holding the administration accountable and it is a DIRECT THREAT to the rights and freedoms of everyone in America. This is an attempt to bully lawyers out of taking on any case that challenges the administration and leave everyday Americans with no recourse to fight back when their fundamental freedoms are violated. We must not let that happen. For more than 30 years, the Center for Reproductive Rights has stood strong against attacks on reproductive freedom. We have litigated scores of cases in federal courts, including against the U.S. government, regardless of the political party in power. We will NOT back down in the face of this intimidation campaign—not while the admin refuses to defend women denied emergency abortion care; not while it condones violence at clinics; and not while doctors are under threat. Not now and not ever. With fundamental freedoms under threat, we stand ready to defend them boldly and fearlessly. Support our work and help us prepare for the fights ahead: https://lnkd.in/diWc5wrP
