The legislation for paid autonomous trucking, ignited by Mars Auto, passed Congress in January this year and will be enacted tomorrow. Today, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport along with the Korea Expressway Corporation introduced new frameworks to support for self-driving trucks. In March 2023, we became the one and only company in Korea to be granted a special exemption for paid autonomous trucking. Since then, we have expanded our Class 8 long-haul trucking operations based on this exemption. With over 1,200,000 km of proven operational results, we have supported the establishment of the frameworks. Mars Auto’s unwavering commitment to autonomous trucking will continue to lead the industry forward. Korea's first late-night autonomous taxi operation… Future transportation unfolds in downtown Gangnam The Gangnam and Seocho areas of Seoul will soon test late-night autonomous taxi operations, marking a significant step in transportation technology. This initiative, part of the 4th industrial revolution, aims to enhance nighttime mobility for citizens through an app-based service. The late-night autonomous taxi service will launch on September 26, in Gangnam-gu, as part of a broader plan that includes demand-responsive services and autonomous route buses. Seoul's infrastructure and policy expertise are positioned to support the seamless integration of autonomous driving into both public transportation and personal travel. Operating from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM on weekdays, the service will start with three vehicles in designated areas, with plans for expansion in response to demand by the first half of next year. Initially free, the service will transition to paid options by 2025 and will operate mainly on major thoroughfares while employing manual driving in residential and sensitive areas. Users will summon taxis via the Kakao T app, which requires no additional procedures for existing users. Real-time route navigation based on passenger requests will be employed, enhancing the transportation landscape in Korea. The app will also provide operational status updates and information regarding additional autonomous services across other districts. In addition, late-night autonomous driving buses will operate in conjunction with regular transport services. The city plans to continually expand its autonomous transportation projects, focusing on areas underserved by current public transport systems. This project aims to embed autonomous driving firmly within Seoul's transportation framework. #MotiveAsia #SouthKorea https://lnkd.in/g83ckctD

Seoul autonomous districts respond to fires amid continued electric vehicle safety scares [City Zoom] Following recent electric vehicle fires in South Korea, autonomous districts in Seoul are implementing various safety measures. Seongdong-gu is collaborating with local fire and police departments to enhance fire prevention, providing fire suppression equipment like mobile tanks and extinguishing covers. They are also conducting joint fire response training and considering thermal imaging CCTV for early fire detection at charging stations. Seocho-gu plans to install fire response kits with suppression tools in accessible locations and will monitor electric vehicle parking spaces with thermal imaging cameras for early detection of potential fires. Gangnam-gu, with the highest number of registered electric vehicles, is equipping public parking lots with suffocating fire extinguishers and monitoring temperatures with installed cameras. Gwanak-gu is forming a task force to assess local electric vehicle charging stations and their fire safety measures, conducting inspections, and providing firefighting education to safety managers. The district aims to introduce management regulations for electric vehicle entry based on charging status and to inform residents about fire prevention and response strategies. Officials emphasize the importance of preventing overcharging during heat waves amidst growing public anxiety. #MotiveAsia #SouthKorea https://lnkd.in/gwZBaaU6

Electric car purchased with cheap fuel costs, need to be driven for 3.5 years to recoup the initial investment?… Reconsidering cost-effectiveness Ms. Moon, a 37-year-old resident of Seoul, canceled her purchase of a small electric vehicle after reassessing its cost-effectiveness, influenced by recent incidents of electric vehicle fires and increasing insurance premiums. Although initially attracted by the savings on fuel and the vehicle's environmental benefits, Moon realized that the savings were minimal unless driving long distances frequently. The article highlights a growing trend among consumers to rethink the financial viability of electric vehicles. Despite government subsidies, electric cars remain pricier than gas-powered counterparts, such as the Tesla Model 3 versus the Genesis G70. Insurance premiums for electric vehicles are also higher, averaging 893,000 won, and can be up to 1.4 times that of traditional vehicles due to greater repair costs associated with electric vehicle fires. For a typical user driving 15,000 km annually, fuel costs for electric vehicles are lower compared to gas vehicles, leading to an estimated payback period of 3.5 years. However, for those driving less than 10,000 km annually, this period extends significantly. When comparing electric to hybrid vehicles, such as the Kia Niro, an electric vehicle buyer might take up to 36 years to break even. Experts advise potential buyers to weigh the benefits and costs thoroughly, considering factors like battery maintenance and individual driving patterns. #MotiveAsia #SouthKorea https://lnkd.in/gtYZjC6x
