I had a great time chatting to Ben about fusion and my latest experiment. I've always believed science communication is so important - and fusion is one of those topics which seems to carry a lot of controversy and confusion! Why is it so tricky for us to fuse material here on Earth? Why is fusion 'always 20 years away'? Why is fusion energy important when we have other clean energy sources? Last month, we achieved a major breakthrough in our pursuit of a commercially viable form of inertial fusion, by successfully increasing the ‘standoff’ distance – the distance travelled by the projectile to the fusion target – by more than 10 times. Excited to share my recent experience on the Insiders Guide To Energy podcast, where I had the pleasure of discussing the future of fusion energy alongside David Cohen-Tanugi with Chris Sass and Jeff McAulay on Insider's Guide to Energy ! This conversation was a lot of fun to record, but we touched on a number of really important topics - and it was just great to air some of the discussions David and I have had offline as well. Fusion holds immense opportunities, not just for established players but also for new entrants with fresh ideas. We need inbound open innovation to propel fusion forward. At the same time, investing in fusion will create spin-off opportunities, helping the sector gain near-term relevance while we work towards its long-term revolutionary potential. Some companies might find that their real value lies in areas they hadn’t initially considered. In the discussion, I used a "Mission to Mars" analogy for fusion, hypothesising that while some players plan to go all the way to Mars, others may pivot on the way there, and become the best at building and launching satellites. Both routes would be examples of successful innovation. At Kyoto Fusioneering, we're focused on developing technologies for the burgeoning fusion industry. The challenges in fusion are vast, and there are many as yet untapped problems that are ripe for innovation and investment. This piece on Fusion has come under fire in some Fusion circles. But read it closely- it is a soft admonition and a fair one. As we develop Commercially Viable Fusion (CVF), we must be fully aware of its capital intensity (and thus clustering in large and relatively rich countries), the parts of the supply chain and fuel cycle that are neither abundant nor perfectly fairly extractable, and so on. Further, it is fair for folks to be skeptical and to ask questions. Anyone of us deep in the Fusion world can answer the questions and work to allay fears that this is always "30 years away." Let's not react and let's also not boast. We have come a LONG way and we have a LONG way to go. There are HUGE wins to be had this year and next and next. HUGE. But to get to CVF, we need a joint effort. We need deep respect for all people and orgs pursuing CVF. We SHOULD have scientific debate and disagreement and we SHOULD be willing to be truthful.
