What if designers first asked, is it kind? Design Day is a celebration of the transformative power of design to make our world more beautiful, functional, and meaningful; But every great power comes with great responsibility; Here’s about this year’s theme by International Council of Design : “For International Design Day, we want to go a step further. It is not enough to simply meet the criteria for not being ‘bad’, we want to see a world where design strives to be kind, generous and caring. What if designers first asked, is it kind? What if the measure of design was how well it cared for people and their relationships rather than how profitable it was? The International Design Day theme for 2024, ‘is it kind?’ is about building kindness into design practice.”

We have some BIG news... The Design Council has been selected to host the 34th World Design Congress in London, for the first time since 1969! In September 2025 the World Design Organization's prestigious three-day event will gather the international design community and thought leaders from business, research and education. It's an incredible opportunity to shine a light on British design and champion the event’s crucial theme of “Design for Planet”. It's the "Olympics of design", and it's coming to the UK! 🎉 A huge thank you to our bid partners London Design Festival, @the Design Museum, Greater London Authority, Mayor of London, Design Business Association (DBA), Royal College of Art, University of Greenwich, PDR International Centre for Design and Research, Innovate UK, Creative Industries Council and Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). How to get Design for Transition into this showcase? When I studied Product Design, I was concerned that it was often done in the context of the objective "to sell more stuff". It is easy to identify where Design is used to further business as usual , linear business models, consumerism... To achieve any sort of continuity within the changing external operating environment the powerful tools of design (described by Bill McDonough as "a series of statements of intent") must be applied to the challenge of changing how we meet needs in a way that is consistent with that changing external operating environment. Design for Transition, not just For the Planet. I have been developing design tools for sustainability for over 20 years, but it seems that in the last 10 years things have slowed or reversed, and we are in a narrow "eco-technology" mindset. This event coudl get us out of that rut.

🎨 “We desperately need good design in this world and we desperately don't need bad design and thats why its so important that we should come to terms with it.” I recently came across a thought-provoking video by Alice Rawsthorn discussing the concept of "Bad Design". Her insights shed light on the often-overlooked aspects that shape our daily experiences. If you're interested in challenging conventional design notions and gaining valuable perspective, I highly recommend giving it a watch: https://lnkd.in/eXNMSkrj

There is no one-size-fits-all design to accommodate all the world’s staging needs. In fact, flexibility and multi-functionality have never been more in demand. Stability and strength are critical, but portability and user-friendly convenience are also essential. Here are four trends that bring increased flexibility and functionality to performing arts spaces: https://lnkd.in/gCdGQK5T

Flexible intimate spaces. This is a project that I hope to see very soon, with a symbolic, cultural, creative, and distinctly Italian significance. Envisioned for years as a significant international cultural establishment in the heart of Lower Manhattan, the Perelman Performing Arts Center (PAC NYC) stands as the final piece and cultural cornerstone of the 2003 initiative to reconstruct the World Trade Center site following the tragedy of 9/11. PAC NYC serves as both a cultural hub and a testament to the transformative power of the arts. Its striking metamorphosis is remarkable: by day, it presents itself as a sturdy, monolithic structure, only to become a luminous, translucent cube after nightfall. This transformation is made possible through the remarkable illumination expertise of the Italian brand Flos, which has turned the venue into a true masterpiece — a result of the innovative lighting concept crafted by Tillotson Design Studio. 🙌 What’s your take? # 300 ART, United States 👉 More contents on our website, the link to the featured news is in the first comment below. 🎯 If you want to learn more about our transformative approach to generating growth (yes, what we call innovation marketing!), feel free to write us privately.
