There is something wrong with the Quinolinate Phosphyribosyl Transferase (QPRT) enzyme on PLWH otherwise most of the Quinolinic acid would transform to NAD(+) ("De-novo" pathway). I think chronic inflammatory states like HIV lean the pathway toward 3HK, 3HAA, and Quinolinic acid formation with LESS NAD(+) production. Like an intracellular pellagra state?.
