"Pressing for a Purpose: 100 Press-Ups a Day for Bone Cancer Research UK!" Hey everyone, I hope this post finds you well! I'm excited to share with you a personal challenge that I've embarked upon this February. For the entire month, I've committed myself to do 100 press-ups each day, and here's the best part – it's all in support of Bone Cancer Research UK. Why bone cancer, you ask? Well, this cause is close to my heart, and I believe in the power of community and collective action to make a difference. Bone cancer affects individuals of all ages, and the research conducted by Bone Cancer Research UK is crucial in understanding the disease, improving treatments, and ultimately working towards a cure. I chose press-ups as the challenge because it's a physical activity that pushes me beyond my comfort zone. It's not just about the physical effort; it's a symbolic gesture of strength, resilience, and solidarity with those who are battling bone cancer. As many of you know, supporting charitable causes requires more than just good intentions. It requires action. That's why I've set a goal to raise awareness and funds throughout February. Every press-up is a reminder that the more we push ourselves, the closer we get to pushing the boundaries of what's possible in medical research. I invite you all to join me on this journey. I don't know anybody who didn't have to deal with a cancer diagnosis - either their own, or one given to their friends, colleagues, loved ones. One in eight women in the UK will receive a diagnosis of breast cancer during their lifetime. One in eight men will receive a diagnosis of prostate cancer. These are the most common types, but there are many, many more - melanomas, childhood leukemias, sarcomas, glioblastomas, lymphomas, gallbladder cancers, hepatoblastomas, - this list goes on. Thanks to lab research and advances in medical science, millions of patients with many different types of cancer have much better chances of survival today than they had 10, 20, 30 years ago. As a scientist, a medical writer, a former academic researcher and a person who lost someone, I cannot underline enough how passionately I feel about supporting cancer research. This year, after a long break, I will again take part in Swimathon, a fundraising event in support of two amazing charities, Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie. Marie Curie's research priorities include better quality palliative care and supporting people who encounter death and bereavement. CR UK funds thousands of research projects that cover the full range of topics, from the basics of cancer biology to prevention, early detection and drug discovery. We need the collective power of this research to advance our understanding of why cancer happens, why it spreads and how we can stop it. Research matters. We don't have all the answers yet, but we will keep looking for them and keep hoping. On 27 April 2024 I will swim 1.5 km for CR UK and Marie Curie.
