For those of us who have been eagerly awaiting Australia's response to the EU AI Act, the government's new responsible use of AI policy provides some green shoots of hope that we've moved beyond the 'computer says no' phase. Value creators and those of us who like to innovate fast - which shouldn't be an oxymoron in government or anywhere else - should be mindful of the emergent themes from the policy:- 1. Ethics: “Government has an elevated level of responsibility for its use of AI and should be held to a higher standard of ethical behaviour.” 2. Trust: “Public trust in AI and government’s use of it is low, which acts as a handbrake on adoption.” 3. Transparency: “Agencies must make publicly available a statement outlining their approach to AI adoption and use.” 4. Adaptability: “The policy is designed to evolve over time as the technology changes, leading practices develop, and the broader regulatory environment matures.” 5. As innovators, we are constantly trying to push the boundaries. Regulation and red tape only tends to come into peripheral vision (at best) when you're in the throes of trying to make new, cool things happen. But with AI becoming more and more ubiquitous in the enterprise landscape, we need to keep more than one eye on the rapidly evolving regulatory environment. So what should we Aussies be taking from the recent EU AI Act? - Increased regulation is coming here. A matter of when not if. In the early blockchain days it felt pixelated, where regulatory pressure hovered over the shoulder of innovators until the picture sharpened over time. What will AI regulation look like for Australian businesses? Will regulation strangle innovation or will we find the right balance? - By categorising AI based on risk levels, the EU are trying to encourage innovation while safeguarding against potential harms. - Not just humans-in-the-loop but humans to the fore! The EU AI Act places a strong emphasis on protecting human rights and ensuring AI is for the benefit of of society. I liked the quote from the recent Figma conference on this topic: "AI won't take your job, AI will be your job". We can't predict the future, but the EU AI Act is a good starting point for understanding how things are progressing elsewhere and what is to come here in Australia. Let’s shape a future where AI is both innovative and responsible - and where human impact is a primary consideration in our innovation workshops not an afterthought.
