There is much focus on the NHS today following the publication of the Lord Darzi report showing its critical state and the need for radical and systemic change. What may get missed with all the focus on outcomes for patients and the constant politicisation of the issue is that legislation has already changed around the procurement of NHS goods and services (Health Care and the Government Procurement Acts) which address the issue of forced labour and modern slavery in supply chains. Work in NHS England, particularly in procurement take note of this from the Minister of State, Karin Smyth at Department of Health and Social Care: "The Department has pledged to put an end to modern slavery in the National Health Service by meeting my Rt hon. Friend, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care’s duty to assess and mitigate modern slavery risk in NHS supply chains. New regulations will require public bodies procuring goods or services for delivering health services in England to assess the risk of modern slavery and implement reasonable steps to procurement and contracting activities, with a view to eradicating the use of goods and services tainted by modern slavery." If you need support to develop or enhance your procurement decision-making processes or an assessment of the effectiveness of your responses to modern slavery and forced labour then please contact my Business Services colleagues Unseen UK at (business@unseenuk.org) to discuss how we can support you on the journey to eliminate modern slavery in the NHS.

British Prime Minister aspirant Keir Starmer and potential Health Minister Wes Streeting this could be great news for the British Public and the NHS but will it be just another promise to be broken when in government. Aside from the appalling mismanagement of patient and health worker safety over decades in Britain which is seeping into the press daily the commitment of a new Labour Government to a good news cycle will just reinforce the desire of the Management Class to Gild the Statistical Lily with fake news, butchered data and Wellness campaigns. Any decent Socialist would rebel against the rise of Managerialism in Healthcare so what about you and the The Labour Party? Have a look at NSW Health for a real-world example of what needs to change. Give Premier Chris Minns a call. The surgical waiting lists are curated- Surgeons are pressured to change their professional opinion on the urgency of their patient so we can continue to say 99.6% of patients get their operations in 30 days. Deputy Secretary Deborah Willcox AM is the Patient Experience lead. Staff satisfaction surveys are marvelous- we are all happy according to Deputy Secretary (People and Culture) Phil Minns. Presiding over this is the all-powerful NSW Health Secretary Susan Pearce AM who followed Elizabeth Koff AM and so it goes on and on. The Ministry of Health runs the show and the lad from Wollongong The Honorable Ryan Park is kept largely under the thumb of Susan Pearce AM. Senior Clinicians who write to the Health Minister get a 'message in a bottle' from Deputy Secretary (People and Culture) 'Uncle' Phil Minns Health that dissent will not be tolerated. We are convinced he means business but not the sort of business we want to be in. This strategy of the Health Propaganda Ministry was honed under the aptly named previous Health Minister The Hon Brad Hazzard and the 'Tory' Party in their long tenure (Liberal NSW). Sir Keir Starmer you, Wes Streeting and the Labour Partly need to advocate for, and commit to, real change. Change We Can Believe In. Root and branch changes to bring decision making to the coal face of health and support health workers to do what they do best, caring and compassionate care. There are huge savings to be made by reducing the headcount and increasing the competence of management of healthcare. The global movement to remove Doctors and Nurses from decision making has sown the seeds of a toxic culture. The dream of Nye Bevan has turned into Nightmare on Downing Street. Our Duty of Candour has been systematically oppressed and you need to think about real change not more of the same spin. Our Nurses and Doctors have had enough of bad people and culture in health. NHS Confederation chief executive Matthew Taylor responds to Labour's war on #nhs waste announcement: “The NHS is recognised as one of the most efficient healthcare systems in the developed world, but that does not mean our members do not accept that more could be done to improve productivity. Health leaders and their teams are always looking at ways to improve efficiency, but mandating savings plans from Westminster risks throwing up more problems than it would solve. “A new government should recognise the need to invest properly in the NHS: this means its staff, its infrastructure, and its estate. These are three areas where our members say that new investment could fuel increased productivity. But not all of this will have short-term benefits – training and recruiting enough permanent staff to drive down the spending on agencies will take many years. Throwing all the pagers in the bin will only save money if they are replaced with something cheaper." Read Matthew's full response 👇👇👇 https://lnkd.in/eVyGXWVW

Good health and well-being are such a driving force for national economic development. Countries must prioritize the health of their citizens. This includes ensuring healthcare workers earn a living wage commensurate to their societal role. It also means ensuring healthcare facilities are appropriately equipped. This is not an impossible ask. #ShadesofUs #GlobalGoals

Responding to The Labour Party’s announcement of plans to cut waiting lists and help people back into work, Matthew Taylor chief executive of the NHS Confederation, said: “Health leaders agree with the health and social care secretary that a healthy NHS is vital to both a healthy nation and a productive economy and so, they will welcome that the government will provide additional support to those NHS trusts in areas where there are the highest levels of sickness absence. “Our recent analysis with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) shows that reintegrating between half and three-quarters of people who have dropped out of the workforce for reasons of ill health since 2020 could deliver an estimated £109-177 billion boost to the UK’s GDP (2-3 per cent in 2029) and unlock £35-57 billion in fiscal revenue over the next five years. “While we look forward to understanding what this announcement will mean in practice, it is clear that NHS services won’t need help to simply learn from the best but they will need additional investment and the space to put this into practice too.” Read the full response 👇👇👇 https://lnkd.in/eYGqtaDy

Doing this involves a rethink of the relationship between DWP and DoH, de-stigmatising people who need help, incorporating antiracist and inclusive approaches to care / support and designing and articulating a new intention for the work of welfare along with the processes necessary to meet that intention. We alrwady know that for every month someone is out of work MH deteriorates and we also know that the assessments for people who are physically and mentally unable to work can be unforgiving at best and cruel at worst. To unlock both the potential and the desire to work ( most people have ) we must embrace the notion of engagement, then meaningful engagement then work as part of the process of doing the above. More of the same won’t work .

Shameful Actions This dispute is clear microcosm of the issues facing health services across Aotearoa. Failure of national strategy and policy. Failure of adequate funding. Failure of defining responsibility. Placing the burden back on staff. The shame falls on those on the top over successive governments, and on health managements which have avoided facing reality and calling out the real issues. All quite deliberate and well understood. Good on the dedicated paramedics on trying to bring matters to a head. With good intent and creativity paramedical services can make a bigger contribution to health care.
