IT’S PINK MONTH! 💗 In recognition and commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, InSIST Global joins the awareness campaign to raise awareness about the disease affecting 24.5% of the world’s women population. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide. For this reason, the month of October is dedicated to educating women on early detection and the importance of early screening to effectively tackle the disease and to get timely treatment. According to The Standard’s October 2022 publication on Breast Cancer, African women are more likely to die from breast cancer at any age in most African countries due to lack of awareness and also due to lack of facilities for diagnosis and treatment of this deadly disease. 🎀 Embracing Change, Spreading Awareness: This Monday, our team got together, all decked out in pink, to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 👚 During our Monday All Staff Meeting, we engaged in a thoughtful discussion about this significant health matter. Here are a few facts that underpin our commitment: 🎗️ According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation Women represent 47% of the current workforce, and 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. 🎗️ In 2023, an estimated 297,790 women and 2,800 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. 🎗️ When caught in its earliest, localized stages, the 5-year relative survival rate is 99%. 🎗️ Advances in early detection and treatment methods have significantly increased breast cancer survival rates in recent years, and there are currently over 3.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. We encourage everyone to take a moment this October to learn more about breast cancer, support those affected, and get involved in awareness campaigns. It’s Black Family Cancer Awareness Week. During Black Family Cancer Awareness Week, PanCAN shines a light on members of our community committed to advancing health equity. From leading-edge researchers to healthcare professionals to passionate advocates, our strength comes from the diversity of voices coming together to raise awareness and push for change. Here are three ways to get involved: 1. On June 27, PanCAN hosts a free virtual event, “Talk to a Doctor: Pancreatic Cancer Awareness in the Black Community.” Dr. Marcus Noel, an oncologist and researcher at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, will be taking YOUR questions. RSVP and submit your questions for Dr. Noel. 2. Know the risk factors for pancreatic cancer and learn more about disparities facing the Black community. 3. Share this information with your friends and family. Help raise awareness of pancreatic cancer in the Black community by sharing your own experiences on social media using #BlackFamCan and @PanCAN.

Two of the women in my immediate family died of ovarian cancer. It’s a particularly shitty cancer. The symptoms are often vague and could relate to any number of other things. They can easily be mistaken for non-fatal illnesses and even the medical profession can miss and misdiagnose earlier symptoms. There’s also no screening for ovarian cancer and many women know nothing about it or have never even heard of it. It’s often not until the cancer is advanced that it is diagnosed - and then the prognosis is bad. More than 1500 women are diagnosed with it each year and currently around three quarters of those diagnosed will die from it. That translates into approximately a thousand women dying every year from this cancer. Here’s some resources – check them out and share with friends and family. 🎗️ October is #BreastCancerAwareness Month, a time when we unite globally to stand with those affected by this serious disease. At Gilead, we recognize the immense challenges that individuals and their loved one's face on this journey and remain ambitious in our quest to make a difference. Let's not just raise awareness this October but also honor the experiences, needs, and feelings of those affected by breast cancer. About half a year ago we shared insights from a study conducted in the Netherlands by the Dutch Breast Cancer Patient Association (BVN) with Gilead's support. This research sheds light on the unique needs of women with breast cancer, especially those with Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC). For me, one of the most striking conclusions of the study was the strong need to regain autonomy. Almost all women with TNBC expressed how important it is for them to be seen and heard, whether that is through access to good and honest information or by having a say in treatment decisions. Today, I would like to raise this topic again. We need to initiatiate joint discussion on how we can best help women to maximize their voices in breast cancer decision-making.
