Last week was #DeafAwarenessWeek   Summer White and Chloe Pearson from were both kindly invited along to The Percy Hedley Foundation, to Learn BSL - They were taught signs for the alphabet, numbers, family members and animals 💜 The power of learning British Sign Language (BSL) can make such a positive impact! It’s such a beautiful language with its own structure, its own grammar, and even its own slang! It’s a common misconception that BSL is difficult to learn, as it’s a non-verbal and purely visual language. But don’t be put off! The Students were our tutors, and they were all amazing at teaching! Both Summer & Chloe were really surprised at just how quickly they both picked it up! Meet Maryville College's Faculty! Meet Stephanie Proctor (she/her), Assistant Professor of ASL and Program Coordinator for ASL & Deaf Studies. Teaches: ASL 1-5, Deaf Culture & History, ASL & Deaf Studies Seminar, ASL Literature, and Senior Study Favorite class to teach: ASL Courses and Literature. Some questions about Deaf education presently in India: Any statistics or info, especially from Deaf people or those closely involved with Deaf community appreciated: How many Deaf children are there under age 18? How many are taught in Deaf schools, versus how many in regular schools, and how many not getting an education? For those who are in regular schools, do they have interpreters/specialist services? Thanks so much! It is for a forward I am writing for a children's book about a Deaf boy, from India, attending a US public school. I want to make sure I'm including accurate information. Ethiopian Sign Language (EthSL) is a crucial means of communication for the Deaf community in Ethiopia, offering a unique and expressive way for individuals with hearing impairments to interact with the world around them. Understanding even the basics of EthSL can significantly contribute to fostering inclusive and support for those who rely on visual communication. By familiarizing ourselves with the Ethiopian Sign Language Alphabet finger representations illustrated in the attached image, we can bridge the communication gap and extend our empathy to the hearing-impaired community. Learning EthSL goes beyond just acquiring a new skill; it signifies a commitment to recognizing the diverse ways people connect and fostering a more compassionate society where everyone, regardless of their abilities, feels understood and supported in times of need.

This is something that is 100% accurate. For someone who is profoundly deaf in my left ear, I struggle in everyday life and activities and therefore hold Deaf Awareness so close to my heart. For those who aren't familiar with someone who is deaf, all I urge you to remember is to just be patient. I don't expect everyone to know about my hearing loss, nor do I expect people to know sign language as I, myself, only know the basics. Speaking clear and slow and being patient is the best you can do when speaking to someone who is deaf or hard of hearing. I know, personally, I get extremely frustrated too a lot of the time, especially when I have to ask multiple times for someone to repeat something. Teaching Deaf children you need another level of love, patience, endurance, resilience, grit and determination. Because sometimes you would get frustrated like FRUSTRATED but you have you mueve 🥺. I was telling a friend yesterday,that not all teachers can teach a deaf child. You need to be equipped with the right skills, knowledge, experience and have different learning methods in other to teach a deaf child well. Few days ago, I was teaching a Hard of Hearing Boy in JSS 3. Lucky for me he knows how to read but he doesn't understand what he reads 😔. We tested his understanding level and got to find out that he is in nursery 1 😳🥺. OMO! I weak buh we mueve. Thank God he can read and his pronunciation is good. We quickly got to work, bought Queen Primer 1 & 2. And started with the meaning of 2 letter words. It was a virtual class and for things he didn't understand after explaining we had to show him the visual representation and their meaning. For example: NET - We had to show him the image of a football net, sleeping net, fishing net and othe nets. This helped him put images and meaning to the words.
