✈ Offsites need to be carefully and strategically developed with clear goals in mind. Our offsite was an experiment in building a strong foundation for our team. For a company that has grown rapidly in the last six months, we knew that building trust, warmth and respect amongst our team was key. On a basic level, ensuring everyone knew what the other did, who to go to and why, really mattered. But thinking about the bigger picture, we wanted to foster our values, and really bring people together to be motivated about our mission and see the important roles we all played within it. That meant a Town Hall (which was the first one for many of our new team members) and a hypothetical case study where each team presented on their part of the journey. The results? ·      A clear understanding of everyone’s roles in the process ·      A great overview of how the full process works ·      Respect for each team member and their expertise and experience ·      Brilliant questions and suggestions on how to streamline and improve the process even more It is too easy for businesses to develop in silos, and whilst that hyperfocus on your own role and goals can be great for results, none of that matters if it falls apart down the line. If we win, we win as a team. Lots of our team members said this was one of the best parts of the trip (which is saying something, considering the absolutely amazing food and wine!) “The case study was one of my favourite moments – as someone who is still relatively new, getting to see the whole process beginning to end, really showed how integral everyone is. I was also just so impressed by what experts my new colleagues are. After a year where you fell short, how do you balance the need to examine what went wrong—while also looking forward to what you can solve? Last week Woden held our annual retreat. As frustrating as big pieces of 2023 were, the last 16 weeks were incredible: Q4 was our best quarter ever (props Andrew McWilliams and David Grimaldi for incredible work). As a leader, I have a tendency to want to interrogate and understand everything that went wrong, and ensure everyone else sees it too. Rachel Fox wisely counseled me that what our team needed was to build on what's working. We decided to just accept where we were for 2023, and look forward. We re-anchored our team in our mission and values, and decided to look at what we need to do in 2024 to advance those towards our vision. Some key things I learned from our team this past week: 1. Broaden the circle: Most of the retreat content was delivered by other people on the team, so the buy-in was higher than if I had just done it. 2. Clear objectives: I took the approach of laying out 7 objectives for 2024, and leaving it to the team to find a way to reach them. 3. Look forward: You can't do anything about what's already happened, so focus the team on what it can do tomorrow—not what it didn't do yesterday. 4. Invite others in: I shy away from asking people to make the commitment to Woden that I have, but people want to be asked to build something new. 5. Lead as a peer: By handing over the reigns to others, I was able to participate in conversations, not lead them. It was refreshing to work alongside the team, and motivating for 2024. I'm proud of the work everyone has done to think about how the #StoryKernel helps build #essentialbrands. We've got an exciting year planned of revamping our StoryAccelerator offering, expanding our team, and ramping up two new hires I'm excited to announce next week.

Since I joined Glide, I've been trying to find what our customers have in common. I think I've finally found it! I talked to business owners, COOs, CTOs, sales leaders, HR directors, teachers, freelancers, you name it. You'd first think these people have nothing in common. How on earth can I target them as a marketer? But in every conversation, I had the same feeling. Happy Birthday Selectum 🎉 Today is the 5th birthday of Selectum. It marks a time when we begin to run faster, formulate our goals better, and understand our environment more deeply. Bringing a startup through a pandemic and a war economy presented significant challenges. Understanding that starting production and creating a new brand for an innovative product simultaneously was a challenging task, and choosing to focus only on production was a significant learning experience. As Simon Sinek suggests in -The Infinite Game- "If you’re not willing to blow up your own company, the market will blow it up for you. Companies often think about flexibility defensively, not offensively. Be willing to make a profound strategic shift and accept short-term losses to stay in the game. If you have a just cause and trusting teams, people will understand why you’re doing it and agree."

When we work together, we combine our strengths and balance each other's weaknesses. We achieve goals far beyond the reach of an individual. We build a sense of community, diverse perspectives, and innovative solutions. As I prepare to launch my Healthtech content platform, ''theHotBleep'', I'm faced with the question: who do I bring on board to be a part of the team? I am intersted to learn, how do you choose your team? Teamwork is the key to success, but as a self-confessed perfectionist, delegation can be tough. Does anyone else struggle to delegate? While business school encourages startups to have co-founders to help shoulder the burden, I struggle to find common ground in negotiations. Any advice from other founders? So, I'm eager to hear your thoughts and stories on teamwork and co-founders. Let's build something great together!
