Career Update: I am incredibly excited to share that I have joined Atlan as Chief Financial Officer! In my 18+ year journey so far, I’ve been fortunate to work at 3 start-ups in different phases and 2 public companies, including a fortune 50. The most fulfilling periods across that time have involved work that required building things or capabilities that didn’t exist or driving outcomes that created value for the business. So, as I was thinking about my next chapter, I was looking for an environment where I could do both. And It became very clear that my best bet was joining an ultra high-growth company. The criteria I distilled down to was - A visionary team focused on solving a real problem and obsessed about customer delight. When I met Prukalpa ⚡ and Varun Banka for the first time, I was blown away by the problem discovery and the founding story of this company: A data team working on the world's largest government data lake, struggles with the data governance challenges and a lack of good solutions, takes it upon themselves to build one internally. After realising that this innovation would benefit the data teams across the globe, decides to build a company with single-minded focus on solving the customer problem and user experience. Seeking further validation, I reached out to industry experts and ecosystem partners, one of whom said, “This company is onto something. Customers love their product. It has the best user experience. and I am talking about fortune size companies” This reaffirmed my belief in the company's potential. But what truly sealed the deal for me was the founders' unwavering commitment to building an enduring company with the right DNA, fueled by passion and a relentless pursuit of excellence. And 2 weeks in, what have I seen? The company has signed fortune 100 customers inbound. Our sales team suggested that a customer hold off on buying Atlan because they are not ready to derive the value from our offering yet - earning their trust for life. A passionate user of our product wants to showcase Atlan’s offering to other BUs in his company. The slack channels are buzzing with messages of customer love that are being celebrated. It’s crazy - and the best way I could summarize is - the place has Magic in the culture and product, Moat in the business, and Momentum as a company. I've been in my role as CFO with the City of Rossland for 3 years now! It got me reflecting a bit on what CFO stands for and about leaderships role in holding a space of positivity.... CFO stands for a lot of things:  Chief Financial Officer (what my e-signature says) Consistently F*****g Overstretched (F*****g = Feeling) And, an acronym I’m aiming to embrace and figure out going forward:   Certified Fundamental Optimist This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot of late. _____ (local government, academia, healthcare, entrepreneurship, fill in the blank) work is hard.  Maybe it’s midlife, maybe it’s the current state of the world, maybe it because for the last several years I’ve been limping through a PhD with a “critical realist” methodological approach... but I’ve been thinking a lot about how to deliberately create and hold a space of optimism. It takes effort and intention to push back against industry norms of what can at times feel like martyr culture, trudging forward one pensionable day at a time. As I head into year three, I’m stating an intent to unapologetically push conversation toward possibility, creativity and having fun along the way. 🐻 Why the bear warning picture? I recall back to when I moved to the West Kootenays seeing one of these at a trailhead for the first time and essentially walking right back to the car (ever since I was young, I've had a severe grizzly bear allergy). I’ve since learned that there are a lot of parallels between being bear aware and succeeding in work. Know what you are getting into by doing lots of research, its better to travel with friends, and its important to have fun making a bit of noise (bear-akoke - the act of singing to keep bears away) - or in the case of work trying to bring levity to colleagues.
