Great ideas start with a conversation.
Thrilled to be part of the panel for One for the City's support event "Starting Young: Supporting Opportunities for the Young People of Leeds." I'll be talking about the work Generation UK & Ireland does to transform social mobility in Leeds, and look forward to hearing insights from fellow panelists Oly Newton and Abby Dix-Mason. Thanks to One for the City team for giving space to this hugely important topic and for the opportunity to collaborate. We need to work collectively to create brilliant opportunities for young people in Leeds and to enable fair accessibility and inclusion. This article about the ed tech company 2U is a reminder to nonprofits as well as private companies: No matter how laudable your mission, or how needed your services are, organizations must be cost-conscious, clear-eyed, and business-savvy
Six years ago, education technology company 2U was a "steamroller," with a market value topping $5 billion. Now, the company is valued at roughly $30 million and facing an existential crisis. What went wrong?

Good point Kristin Lord NGOs also can get caught in unsustainable growth trends when they ignore the underlying trends, and/or are not aligning value, funding, and real market/community needs. For an NGO, being over-leveraged may be less about debt, and more about over reliance on one funder or funding mechanism. As a reference point, I was leading eCornell (Cornell's online education company) when 2U launched. I remember talking at the time that one of two things might happen: (1) 2U would struggle to get leading universities to partner with them and flame out quickly, or (2) if they did get them on board, the Universities would eventually realize they were giving up too large of a share of the revenue for services it could provide themselves; and would take it all back. In the end, I was impressed on what 2U was able to accomplish in their growth, but the collapse is hard to watch.

Humanity-Centred Service Design Trainee 🐝 at Humblebee | SDN Ambassador & Community Voices Host | Linköping University Alumni | Street Photographer
1 in 4 people in Sweden are foreign-born, That is the fifth biggest number worldwide! Yet in many suburban neighbourhoods around the country, communication gaps create challenges, especially for the younger generation. In a recent project at the MSc Design program at Linkping University, me, Alexandra Granqvist, Arad Jafari, Cornelia Holmlund, Ebba Kramer, Junyu He and WANLIN LI had the opportunity to witness this firsthand. Partnering with Linköpings Kommun, we realised that in many of these diverse neighbourhoods in Linköping (Skäggetorp, Ryd, Berga) newcomers felt disconnected, with information about integration activities and events not reaching them. Our team’s solution was a hybrid physical + digital platform called “Birding”. Ensuring: → access for everyone (regardless of tech savviness or language skills) → user-friendliness (every element aimed to foster a sense of belonging) For more on the project, check out the detailed case study on my portfolio: https://lnkd.in/dCDHi6HA Have you encountered similar communication challenges in your community? What solutions have you seen? #socialimpact #servicedesign #inclusivedesign #communityengagement

Together Outdoors (TO) announced the opening of the application period of its Inclusive Micro-Grant Program, a new initiative aimed at bolstering capacity for small and rural grassroots organizations that are key to creating a more inclusive and welcoming outdoor recreation environment. The 2024 Inclusive Micro-Grant Program is poised to continue the great support started in 2022 and will focus on two key areas: 1.) Research + Resources: Financial backing for projects developing research and resources that facilitate inclusion outdoors. This includes the creation of educational toolkits, multimedia content, and translation services to ensure accessibility for all. 2.) Activating Change Outdoors: Support for outdoor recreation programming, events, and leadership development initiatives specifically designed to empower communities of color, LGBTQIA+, individuals in underserved regions, people with disabilities, and other intersecting minority groups. Together Outdoors invites grassroots organizations that embody these focus areas and share our vision for a diverse outdoor community to apply for the Inclusive Micro-Grant Program. Organizations are encouraged to apply to the inaugural grant round by March 11, 2024. Application materials should be submitted via email to Ambreen Tariq, Together Outdoors Coalition Lead at togetheroutdoors@recreationroundtable.org.
