Today, we want to recognize and celebrate the 2 year MARC anniversary of Rosemary Lokko, CRNP! Rosemary is the Nurse Practitioner here at Maryland Addiction Recovery Center, a vital member of our medical team. Rosemary provides direct medical care to our patients while they are in treatment at MARC, as well as coordinates with any outside medical providers or specialists to ensure all patients are receiving collaborative care for their medical needs. She helps patients with non-acute medical issues, manage any chronic illnesses they may have, and helps them move towards a path of preventative health and wellness in their early recovery. We are grateful for her compassionate care and ongoing support to our patients. Congratulations, Rosemary!

Following in from my post about the Assisted Dying Bill here is a very thoughtful article. As one participant in the article commented, there are gaps in the knowledge of many medical professionals when it comes to understanding mental capacity. And, as someone who regularly has to advise clients on this, it can be very subjective. https://lnkd.in/edEEd5Db

Check out my op-ed and if you'd like to support this important legislation in Illinois, reach out and get to know Illinois Psychedelic Society and Compassion & Choices.
"I want the pain to go away." That’s what some of my clients say to me when they’re dying. And sometimes, all I can do in return is hold their hand. Read my latest op-ed up at the Chicago Sun-Times: https://lnkd.in/geMw7c9P

Having a child with life-limiting severe medical issues can create a life that feels isolating. During our journey, I have had this nagging feelings over the years of how I can no longer relate to friends and family, the very few that stuck around after Malia's diagnosis because I now lived a life that is far from "normal." The recurring trauma and struggles parents like myself endure while caring for our child makes us see life and the world differently now. So how can we now relate to "normal" people who haven't experienced this life? My suggestions: Build your community/support- ianacare (" I Am Not Alone" Care) is a fantastic tech-enabled caregiver support app that allows you to add friends, family, church members, and others to build your informal practical and emotional support. When my son was going through inpatient cancer treatment, I could request meals as a way of helping me care for my other family members at home. I also used it to arrange transportation for my "healthy" child so she could continue with her school sports. Talk Therapy- The challenges caregivers face are constant, and the toll it takes on one's mental health is real! I know most caregivers lack the resources to access traditional in-person mental health services, but thankfully, the advances in technology are on our side. TalkSpace is an excellent option for online mental health services; although it's unlikely they will have a therapist with experience in what you are facing, that's not the important part. You need someone with whom you can share your personal thoughts and feelings through all the highs and the lows. Your spouse or significant others may have a different care burden or perspective - find YOUR mental health ally. Last, The Courageous Parents Network is a non-profit organization that empowers parents or guardians caring for children with severe medical conditions. CPN has a compilation of resources like podcasts, videos, printable guides, guided pathways, and blogs that reflect the stories, experiences, and perspectives of caring for seriously ill children. Like other resources I have shared, the Courage Parent Network was born through a parent's journey with their child. Blyth Lord, the founder, was a mother to a child diagnosed with Tay-Sachs, a genetic condition that is incurable and results in a short life expectancy. You can read more about her story here: CPN: Our Origin There is so much more than I could say here, but for the sake of keeping this short and to the point, I will leave you with this for now. #complexcare #patientcare #caregiving #caregiver #caregiversupport Support me and my content by becoming a paid subscriber here: https://lnkd.in/eTM7PeX8

“How to Get Your Affairs in Order” – Online – Thursday, March 14, 2024 (2 pm – 3:30 pm central time) This program will provide suggestions for when a doctor says it’s time to “get your affairs in order.” We will examine a checklist for the dying and how many of the items on such a checklist can be done years before a diagnosis. Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to: ∙ Understand how planning for the end of life leads to a better death someday and a better life right now. ∙ Recognize the importance of making plans, writing them down, and sharing them with others. ∙ Identify actions that reduce fears and anxiety. ∙ Recognize the ways that death doulas, care teams, elder care attorneys, and loved ones help support people at the end of life. The link will be emailed to you before the session. This is available for 1.5 CEUs through the Continuing Education Institute of Illinois. I’d also welcome caregivers, patients, and curious participants. Please join us! Each session also includes an “Ask a Doula” Q&A at the end where I’ll answer all your questions. Clinical Psychologist | Supporting children access trauma informed help | Up-skilling front line practitioners working in education, health & social care to deliver the Healing Together programmes.
Trauma informed commissioning means that there is an budget (and expectation) for the team to access clinical supervision. THIS is how we come together to make systemic change. Such an honour to be part of the reference group. Now the challenge is to theory into practice. Lucy Cavell has gone above and beyond to make this a reality. #traumainformed #workforcedevelopment #seniorleaders #commissioning

Trauma informed care is best practice for pediatrics
Some families may have experienced significant challenges or trauma that may not be apparent from a physical exam. And, these experiences can have a negative impact on children’s mental and physical health if not buffered by a safe, stable, and nurturing relationship. In a new video from the AAP, Dr. Khadijia Tribié Reid talks about the importance of providing trauma-informed care and building trusted relationships with her patients and families, so that she can better support them through hard times: https://lnkd.in/eBEVuE4X
