In a report released from the Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention and Policy just last month, 12.2% of Maryland victims reported that the hospital, and 16% reported that a doctor or a therapist was the first point-of-contact for survivors seeking help. These reports to health care professionals are second only to reports to law enforcement. By being prepared for disclosures of abuse, health care providers have the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of intimate partner violence victims. 🚨 Take action to protect victims of domestic abuse and children! Sign and share this important petition calling for the creation of a new statutory organization for Post Separation Abuse Prevention officers. The goal is to investigate family law cases to identify coercive control before the first hearing, ensuring evidence is correctly gathered. If coercive control is found, this agency will notify the police for criminal action under the Serious Crimes Act (2015). They will also have powers to apply for a Secrion 91(14) Order under the Children Act (1989). Support and referrals will be offered and provided to the safe parent and children, aiding in their healing process from abuse. This initiative aims to hold perpetrators accountable and deter them from using the court system to perpetuate abuse. Together, let's create a safer future for survivors. please sign the petition now so no survivors will ever have to set foot in a family court or be made to negotiate with perpetrators: https://chng.it/YcjhC7NjYw 🙏 #DomesticAbuse #ProtectSurvivors #ChildrenSafety

Healthcare Security Consultant | Author | I help healthcare organizations prevent and mitigate violence
Hospitals shouldn’t deter staff from seeking justice and closure after violence. Staff has a right to prosecute patients who commit violence against them. But, staff should be educated on what to expect if they want to press charges against a patient: -Expectations don’t always line up with reality. -The process is long and may not yield the desired results for the victim. Staff should be supported by security through the entire process- including safety planning and court escorts. Ultimately, the courts will decide what happens to the patient who is prosecuted. Victim support is essential to the healing process and security plays a key coordinating role.
