Adaptive reuse and urban regeneration at its best, well done to the whole team involved 👏🏼

One of Riverstone’s greatest strengths is its versatility. It can excel in heritage contexts – offering the same pronounced grain, low water absorption and low calcium carbonate content as indigenous slate, but with even greater strength and weather resistance. But its distinctive phyllitic sheen, longevity and comprehensive guarantees have also seen it become hugely popular for new builds too. The beauty of its unmistakable grey colouring is that it looks perfectly in keeping with historic properties – but can also blend seamlessly with the sleek look of modern architecture. That was one of the key reasons it was selected for use on an ambitious new build in Stalbridge, Dorset. Homeowner John Tuner wanted a material with character to roof the elegant and gently curved new-build, blending equally well with the property’s sleek lines and its leafy West Country surroundings. It was a search that took him to trade shows and exhibitions around the area, until, at West Point Exeter, he encountered SSQ Regional Director Damion Fearnley. John was immediately impressed with Damion’s knowledge and enthusiasm, as he was introduced to a variety of high-quality natural roofing materials – including Riverstone. Like an increasing number of high-end self-build projects, John’s sought to combine elements of modern design with more traditional materials, to create something that was characterful and unique, without clashing with other properties in the area. He loved Riverstone’s colour and texture, and also thought it would partner extremely well with the building’s oak framing. Reference project of the month June: Town Hall of Korbach 🏰 We're excited to share the innovative transformation of Korbach's historic town hall, a project that stands as a testament to sustainable construction and urban mining. This architectural piece, dating back to 1377, was recently redesigned as part of a comprehensive urban renewal effort. It has garnered significant recognition, being selected as one of the top 4 finalists for the German Sustainability Award for Architecture 2023 and receiving an award for exemplary buildings from the state of Hesse. Under the visionary direction of architects from agn, the old 1970s extension of the town hall was demolished with sustainability in mind. The concept of urban mining played a crucial role, allowing for the systematic capture and analysis of demolition materials. This approach enabled the optimal use of resources, achieving an impressive recycling rate of around 62%. Despite challenges with material bonding, innovative solutions ensured that these materials were effectively reused in the new construction. The project didn't just focus on recycling; it also emphasized local processing of materials, minimizing transport routes and costs. The use of RHEINZINK prePATINA ECO ZINC for the roof added both aesthetic appeal and durability. This climate-friendly material, known for its natural patina and long service life, perfectly embodies the project's sustainable values. Korbach’s new town hall harmoniously integrates modern design with historical significance, featuring clear structures and striking gables that link the old with the new. This project sets a new standard for sustainable construction, demonstrating that environmentally responsible building practices can be both ecologically and economically viable. Collaborative effort set to transform Gosford’s Civic heart A design team comprising Plus Architecture, Architecture AND, and CHROFI has emerged victorious in a design excellence competition for the Gosford Alive development — a regionally significant project set to revitalise an entire city block in Gosford's civic centre. The team's design approach was structured around a response to three scales: the city, the neighbourhood, and the home. At the city scale, the project aims to contribute positively to Gosford's urban quality, creating a precinct that will serve residents for generations. Designed with longevity in mind, the project incorporates numerous sustainable design elements, including passive heating and cooling, biophilic green roofs, responsibly sourced materials, solar access, and rainwater harvesting. Native planting and generous ground plane landscaping will help minimise the heat island effect, further enhancing the site's environmental performance.
