St. Kate’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) program received a $100,000 Collaborative Urban and Greater MN Educators of Color (CUGMEC) grant from the Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board. Funding for Fiscal Year 2025 follows the successful implementation of a CUGMEC award in FY 2024. The receipt of CUGMEC funds enables St. Kate’s to offer scholarships to BIPOC teacher candidates, increasing our ability to recruit, retain, and prepare diverse students for teaching positions. This is vital for BIPOC children, as research finds that they have better education outcomes when taught by individuals with shared identities; yet the majority of the teacher workforce in Minnesota is white. The scholarships help attract BIPOC candidates to the ECE at St. Kate’s and deepen support for enrolled students, who enjoy a flexible hybrid program that prepares them for developmentally appropriate classroom practice. New this year, the CUGMEC funds will also support a BIPOC mentorship program, matching small groups of scholarship recipients with current early childhood educators who also identify as BIPOC.

🎓🌟 The Rising Challenge of College Costs: Empowering Access to Education 💸✨ The cost of college education has skyrocketed, making it increasingly challenging for many aspiring scholars to afford. From tuition fees to various expenses like transportation, room and board, and lab fees, the financial burden has intensified. Did you know? There's a significant disparity in private scholarships, with Caucasian students 40% more likely to secure them compared to minorities. Shockingly, minorities receive only about 28% of all scholarships, hindering equitable access to educational opportunities. At Ottis Lee Johnson Scholarship Fund, we're committed to leveling the playing field. College completion is a game-changer for women, boosting employment rates, increasing income, and fostering financial stability. 🌟 Our research the LCU Fund for Women's Education reveals that many scholars, despite working hard, face #housing challenges despite spending nearly half their income on it. Third-year college students, especially those we support, battle higher rates of housing insecurity than freshmen. Working during college doesn't necessarily eliminate basic needs insecurity, and despite their efforts, economically limited women scholars often grapple with financial instability. That's where the LCU Fund grants come in. The Fund awards grants to selected colleges or universities, public or private, that provide undergraduate, graduate, and/or professional programs within the five boroughs of New York City. LCU Funds are used solely to help pay the rent of women scholars preparing for careers in the arts, education, social work, public administration, religious leadership, criminal justice, or health care. https://lnkd.in/eui6UQmt

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have been underfunded for decades upon decades. This fact is not new, but rather is an ongoing reality. In September, the Biden Administration sent letters to 16 governors regarding the inequitable funding of land-grant HBCUs in their respective states and asked them to address the situation. The Biden Administration estimates land-grant HBCUs have missed receiving some $12B over at least a 30 year period. Student Housing of America’s mission is to help students be successful throughout their college career by providing safe and affordable housing designed for their scholastic needs and creating a positive environment for achievement through our various support programs. We work hand in hand with HBCUs, corporate partners, and other organizations to address students’ needs and provide for their well-being. #hbcu #safehousing #affordablehousing #studentsupports #sha #fundingequity

Does anyone remember the scene in Apollo 13 where they are testing and retesting the lunar module start up sequence to access more amps? This is what we need to do in education continuously, reexamine what we do, ask 'why do we do things this way?' and 'is there a better way?'. What would happen if lessons were shortened by 10 minutes to enable something else to happen for example?
It is long overdue. Recognizing that the curriculum is key and that not all children have the same motivations, interests, and skills is the beginning of getting it right for the future. I am sure that many will have come across children and young people who are seen to ‘need’ an alternative provision because they don’t fit the curriculum and examination pathways for the majority. Why should children have to go elsewhere? Why should some children be deprived from learning alongside their friends and peers because schools are not meeting their needs? Inclusion is about every child feeling they belong and that their needs and interests matter. We are so fortunate in Luton that many of our schools recognise this. They value inclusion and work to adapt and accommodate. A great quote from one of our Headteachers ‘School readiness is not about children being ready for school - but about the school being ready to meet the child’s needs.’
SEND inclusion to be key focus of government’s curriculum review
