With a goal to increase access to higher education for low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students, the Virginia College Advising Corps (VCAC) is an AmeriCorps State program based at the University of Virginia. Serving more than 14,000 students at 63 high schools across the Commonwealth, there are currently 60 AmeriCorps members serving with VCAC. VCAC recruits graduating college seniors and recent college graduates to serve as full-time college advisers in high-need high schools throughout Virginia, addressing structural inequities in the education system that have systematically advantaged some populations over others. Advisers become fierce advocates for low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students, fueled by the idea that access to higher education is paramount to racial and economic equity. At Minds Matter Bay Area (MMBay), we're addressing a problem known as undermatching - in short, that gifted and hardworking students from low-income backgrounds severely underestimate their own potential, and lack the support systems required to help them access colleges and careers that they are actually academically qualified for. Now, you might ask: why is this a problem worth solving? If a student is already high-achieving, then they’re going to be fine in life, right? Studies show that’s not the case for low-income students at all. Data indicates: 1. There's an overrepresentation of wealthy students at elite colleges. 2. There's an underrepresentation of high-achieving, low-income students at elite colleges. 3. Low-income students are incentivized toward vocational rather than academic pathways. 4. Doing well in high school is no guarantee of success later in life. St. Kate’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) program received a $100,000 Collaborative Urban and Greater MN Educators of Color (CUGMEC) grant from the Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board. Funding for Fiscal Year 2025 follows the successful implementation of a CUGMEC award in FY 2024. The receipt of CUGMEC funds enables St. Kate’s to offer scholarships to BIPOC teacher candidates, increasing our ability to recruit, retain, and prepare diverse students for teaching positions. This is vital for BIPOC children, as research finds that they have better education outcomes when taught by individuals with shared identities; yet the majority of the teacher workforce in Minnesota is white. The scholarships help attract BIPOC candidates to the ECE at St. Kate’s and deepen support for enrolled students, who enjoy a flexible hybrid program that prepares them for developmentally appropriate classroom practice. New this year, the CUGMEC funds will also support a BIPOC mentorship program, matching small groups of scholarship recipients with current early childhood educators who also identify as BIPOC. 

As we celebrate National School Choice Week, let us take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey of ACE and the school choice movement. ACE Scholarships has played a pivotal role in shaping the future of education, championing Educational Savings Accounts in thirteen states, and expanding school choice in over twenty-five states. This year, we continue to build momentum, with many states considering ESA programs – a historic turning point for the school-choice movement. During this special week, we join state leaders, activists, parents, and schoolchildren in celebrating significant milestones and the promise of a brighter future. At ACE Scholarships , we champion school choice for its transformative impact. We've awarded over 80,000 scholarships across 12 states, providing children with educational freedom and opportunities. We're proud to announce that ACE is administering Utah's new ESA program, providing over $42.5 million annually to 5,000 children. However, there's still much more to be done – especially in jurisdictions resistant to school choice. As we commemorate National School Choice Week 2024, let's focus on those less fortunate. These funds are disbursed by county governments to the school accounts of the successful applicants. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have been underfunded for decades upon decades. This fact is not new, but rather is an ongoing reality. In September, the Biden Administration sent letters to 16 governors regarding the inequitable funding of land-grant HBCUs in their respective states and asked them to address the situation. The Biden Administration estimates land-grant HBCUs have missed receiving some $12B over at least a 30 year period. Student Housing of America’s mission is to help students be successful throughout their college career by providing safe and affordable housing designed for their scholastic needs and creating a positive environment for achievement through our various support programs. Earlier this week, I chaired a panel for one of Paul Hamlyn Foundation's Teacher Development Fund (TDF) cohorts, all of whom are working on primary arts practice teacher development projects. One of the central strands of their work is to address inequities for children and build anti-racist practices into the heart of their projects. Having previously heard from a range of experts to better understand the nature of educational inequities and some of the possible components of anti-racist practice, participants arrived to hear from Kirsty Cooper, Michelle McGrath, and Tyreis Holder sharing their journeys with this work. Once we begin to explore inequities in society, and more specifically in education, we will find it located everywhere. This can lead to a sense of overwhelm. It can seem impossible for the system to be changed from within. When there's a sense of powerlessness, any attempt towards change can feel hopeless. So, we ask, where to begin? These starting points are based on themes that emerged during the panel discussion, my own novice learning and experiences, and are therefore far from exhaustive.
