𝐔𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐣𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 A new international study, co-led by Weill Cornell Medicine, shows that patients with severe brain injury can often display cognitive function despite being unable to move or speak. This phenomenon, known as #CognitiveMotorDissociation, has not been systematically studied in large cohorts until now. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: ⏩ 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧: The study involved 353 adults with disorders of consciousness, primarily due to severe traumatic brain injuries #TBI or interrupted oxygen supply following strokes or heart attacks. Data included electroencephalography #EEG readouts and functional magnetic resonance imaging #fMRI scans. ⏩ 𝐂𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: The study aimed to determine the extent of cognitive awareness in patients with severe brain injuries who appear unresponsive. It sought to uncover whether these patients retain cognitive capabilities despite their outward lack of responsiveness. ⏩ 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: The findings revealed that 25% of the patients exhibited sustained cognitive responses, indicating a higher level of cognitive awareness than previously thought. This discovery has significant implications for patient care and ethical considerations, emphasizing the need to engage with these patients and explore ways to help them connect with the world. 📚 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬: 📌Title: Cognitive Motor Dissociation in Patients with Severe Brain Injuries 📌Authors: Bodien YG, Allanson J, Cardone P, et al. 📌Journal: New England Journal of Medicine 📌DOI: 10.1056/NEJMoa2400645 This research not only advances our understanding of brain injuries but also highlights the importance of using advanced diagnostic tools to uncover hidden cognitive functions. It opens new avenues for patient care and ethical discussions in the medical community. 🌍🔬

I'm thrilled to announce the publication of our research on AI-based STEMI detection in the prestigious Annals of Emergency Medicine! As a resident, I vividly remember the anxiety of interpreting ECGs in the ER, constantly worried about missing a STEMI or unnecessarily activating the cath lab. This personal experience drove me to explore AI solutions. Our retrospective validation, designed with emergency room use in mind, showed promising results. We're optimistic about its potential to support critical decision-making in emergency cardiac care. This research represents a significant step towards alleviating the stress on ER physicians and improving patient outcomes. https://lnkd.in/gS_7Y4iN

✅ Clinical workflow is evolving with the integration of a digital twin fueled by population data and mechanistic models. The twins' interaction opens doors to combining phenotyping, risk prediction and more with traditional clinical care. Importantly, the digital twin's adaptive nature leads to adjustments over time with changing patient data. ✅ Transitioning from static to actionable knowledge at the point of care marks a pivotal shift in care delivery models, necessitating implementation and measurement for quality, safety, and enhanced outcomes. Scientists at the Radcliffe Department of Medicine, University of Oxford, have developed an AI technology capable of predicting the risk of heart problems up to ten years in advance using routine cardiac CT scans. Funded by the British Heart Foundation and supported by the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) Oxford Biomedical Research Centre, this research promises early detection and prevention of heart disease, a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Here’s a gist: Analyzed routine cardiac CT scans and clinical data from over 40,000 individuals across eight hospitals in the UK. Participants were followed for up to ten years to track major cardiac events, including heart attacks, heart failure, and cardiac death. Professor Bryan Williams OBE MD FMedSci, Chief Scientific and Medical Officer at the British Heart Foundation, praised the tool as a valuable asset for clinicians in guiding treatment decisions and interventions.
