"easy job, you only look outside" 🔭 - You study a degree - You go for a masters - You spend thousands of hours at sea training your skills - You work for pennies or volunteer to get more experience - Your read tons of books, research papers and articles to stay up to date on ecology, impacts, behaviour, taxonomy.... - You watch videos to study how the animals move - You also study what is, for what purpose and how can survey equipment affect the animals - You have to go through bureaucracy, like permits, environmental impact assessments and project plans - You pay for and bring your own equipment - You try to help them navigate the environmental regulations - You start your watch, sometimes under the burning sun, and keep an eye on every movement in the water, every reflection, every whitecap, every wave... - You make a report detailing everything and try to make it good - You leave your home, family and friends to work offshore (like the rest of crew) - You miss holidays, birthdays, and all sorts of events (like the rest of crew) - You have the same struggles as anyone else on the vessel Only to have an idiot telling you "you have an easy job, just looking outside". It's not the job itself or the conditions, is dealing with ignorants that I find tiring and difficult and an imposed training in selfcontrol 🧘🏽♀️ Lucky that there's good coffee onboard ☕️ (today homemade donoughts😋🥯), and the marine crew is 5* 😊

Taking a Family Water Scorecard was the first task of the internship and for that we also did water measurements this is what I did. I learned how much water I use and how much I can save by taking certain straightforward measures.

🌊✨ Exciting News! ✨🌊 I am thrilled to share with you my incredible experience participating in the remote externship with Extern, in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy and National Geographic Society, focusing on marine conservation. Marine environments are the lifeblood of our planet, sustaining not only countless species but also providing essential resources for human livelihoods. However, the sustainability of our marine resources is increasingly under threat due to various human activities. Recognizing the urgency of this issue, I embarked on a journey to delve deep into the complexities of marine conservation and find solutions applicable to my local community. Throughout the externship, I had the privilege of learning from the foremost experts in marine conservation through engaging weekly webinars hosted Extern. These sessions provided invaluable insights into the diverse range of issues facing our oceans and the innovative approaches being undertaken globally to address them. One of the most enriching aspects of this experience was conducting my own research and informational interviews with local conservation organizations. By immersing myself in the unique marine ecosystem of my region, I gained a profound understanding of the specific challenges and opportunities for conservation efforts in my community. I utilized ArcGIS technology to create a captivating story map highlighting the conservation efforts in the Gazi community. By integrating geographical data with compelling narratives and visuals, the story map effectively communicated the importance of community-driven conservation initiatives and showcased the progress made in safeguarding marine ecosystems. One highlight of the externship was conducting a comprehensive landscape analysis to pinpoint areas where conservation efforts could be enhanced. By identifying these gaps, we were able to propose targeted strategies aimed at maximizing the effectiveness of marine conservation in our area. Furthermore, I honed my skills in written and visual storytelling, empowering me to effectively communicate the importance of marine conservation and inspire others to take action. Through compelling narratives and visuals, I shared stories of hope and resilience, illustrating how individual actions can contribute to the preservation of our precious marine ecosystems. I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to have been part of this transformative experience, and I am excited to apply the knowledge and skills gained to drive positive change in my community and beyond. 🌊💙 #MarineConservation #ParagoneOne #Extern #TheNatureConservancy #NatGeo #Sustainability

We asked our Community 'What is your dream conservation job?' and nearly 3,000 people voted, as follows: 1. Science & Research - 48% 2. Project / Programme Management - 29% 3. Warden / Ranger - 13% 4. Communications, Marketing & Fundraising - 10% The clear winner is 'Science & Research' with just under half the vote. 'Project/Programme Management' was the second most popular option with 29% of the vote. 'Warden/Ranger' achieved 13% of the vote with 'Communications, Marketing & Fundraising' just behind with 10% of the vote. Other dream conservation jobs suggested by our community included working in Policy, Education and Coral Reef Conservation. What jobs would you add? Education has the potential and power to modify the views of our existing society and give beneficial and necessary knowledge to its people and citizens, which plays a great role in protecting and conserving the environment and solving environment-associated issues. Education on conservation supports every person, even children, to get information and develop values, required skills, and such behaviours that help them in meeting present-day needs without compromising the welfare and interest of future generations. It is for this reason that WCP Zambia developed the Conservation Careers Fair, which provides a platform to enhance the sharing of information on environmental issues to young aspiring conservationists and allows them to network and build connections with experts, as well as potential employers in the conservation space.
