As TransLink and the Mayors’ Council continue to navigate the ongoing financial challenges facing Metro Vancouver’s transit system, a new report sheds light on the catastrophic cuts to transit service that could come as soon as 2025 unless the B.C. Government works with TransLink to fix its broken funding model. Today, TransLink unveiled a new report detailing the dire potential transit service cuts necessary to close its increasing funding gap, despite implementing $90 million in corporate cost-efficiency and revenue measures. I'm a relative newcomer to the transit world, but I'd like to think I have the best seat in the house listening to transit leaders from around the world talk about their agencies on Transit Unplugged. And this topic, a looming and catastrophic fiscal cliff, comes up over and over. Transit is absolutely essential to our region's growth and development. Even if you're not in Metro Vancouver, there is a ripple effect across the province. And Kevin B. Quinn, Jr. is absolutely right. We can't just keep building more roads to service more cars. And cutting service is something I know he'd be loathe to do. Solution? Transit, not just here but across Canada too, needs more support from all levels of government. If the police or fire departments or water treatment plants were facing a fiscal cliff, do you think the answer would be, that we're going to turn off the taps every other day or "it's okay if a few houses burn down or we'll only enforce some laws."? Yeah, no. We're going to have to pony up. Raising fares can't do it alone and that only punishes the people who can least afford it. Let's make sure our leaders know that we think transit is important, that it needs sustainable funding, and programs like transit oriented development should be more common. #transitnerd

Congratulations TransLink on being selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers. In the automotive technology space, much has gone into developing decarbonization technologies from alternative fuels to new methods of zero-emission propulsion. Brilliant and hardworking engineering minds have paved the way for this and we see an increasing number of products that are excelling in the "wild". ("into the wild" - a product that makes its way out of the factory and into the world). Despite the best efforts of OEMs, integration of this technology on the customer side is no cakewalk. First and foremost we have a business to run that has little forgiveness or compromise available. Secondly, we have our longstanding processes and systems that are tried and true but often require adaptation that is only accessible through both a deep understanding of the technology as well as the nuances of the business. The customer side needs the same skilled, technical minds that built the innovative technologies to integrate them and have them excel in the wild. The wild, is after all, where these products make their impact. I hope others will consider making the jump. We're just getting started. https://lnkd.in/ggqvMH6F #transition #zeroemission #lowcarbon #cmbc

Lost in translation: rail and languages 🛤 Under existing rules, train drivers are required to have at least a B1 knowledge of the national language on the network they are operating on. For international journeys, this means that many trains are forced to change train drivers at the border to continue their journey. This issue is particularly impacting smaller operators who need to employ additional train drivers to operate trains in multiple countries such as night trains, or to depend on collaboration with state-owned incumbent railway operators. Interestingly 59,9 % of respondents in the poll published by Railtech think English should be a common language for train drivers. ALLRAIL advocates for One Europe, One Railway: technical barriers to a true Single European Railway Area must be removed. A train driver should have to have sufficient knowledge of the national language or English to operate a train. RailTech Europe ERFA-European Rail Freight Association BLS AG

The European Green Deal systemised, with relevant links to EU regulation and progress update, as per CircuLaw - issued today #ESG #Circulareconomy #EUGreenDeal #Sustainability
Are you working on the circular economy and have you always wondered which upcoming EU regulations will be relevant now and in the coming years? Today, at CircuLaw, we have published the most comprehensive, up-to-date, clickable overview (as far as we know it :)), providing insights into this! All relevant pieces of legislation are shown in a clear and logical visual. Each law is assigned to the overarching legal framework (e.g. Fit for 55, Circular Economy Action Plan, etc.), and colours indicate its status: under negotiation, adopted or implemented. Download the entire overview here: https://lnkd.in/ez9EB7m4. CircuLaw closely monitors the status of all the pieces of legislation and keeps these up to date, so that the platform can be used as a 'single source of truth'. Additionally, we provide useful and accessible information about the most impactful laws - shedding light on relevance for member states and local and regional authorities. Five laws have now been published (#CSRD, #ESPR, #CPR, #SUP, #EED), and five more will be added in the short term, check them out at https://lnkd.in/eDzAdyaJ (still only in Dutch but working on that - auto translate will provide proper results as well). CircuLaw was initiated by City of Amsterdam and Dark Matter Labs. The development of the EU section was supported by Built by Nature. As with all open source information on www.circulaw.nl, it's available for free, so take advantage of it! This is why we need systemic thinking enivironmental consultants! CircuLaw have just released a visual overview of all EU laws supporting the EU Green Deal.. Great to have this view of the big picture but it underlines to me why we need to think across silos and why we need consultants who can synthesize complex legislation and draw meaning from this…..
