Netflix released their new #culture memo this week. There's much I want to say about it. I'll start with 3 things... 💥 It exists... Last week I wrote about the gap between intentions and reality when it comes to culture. Getting clear on the culture you intend to offer, why it matters to your organization and the work you do is essential to long-term organizational success. 💥 It's a 4th iteration... Culture is not a set it and forget it exercise. This is the 4th time they have written/revised the memo, emphasizing the need for ongoing refinement and revision of the culture to adapt to changing circumstances 💥 It's not a secret... It's not possible to steal another organization's culture. Sharing your culture broadly is a powerful way to attract and engage talent and hold yourself accountable to doing what you say. If you need assistance in enhancing your organization's culture or aligning it with your goals, reach out. Let's start a conversation on how we can assist you in cultivating a culture that propels your organization forward. #leadership #culturememo #talent #CultureTalk #CEO #HR

Here is the 2024 Netflix Culture Memo and a few ways you can be intentional about strengthening your team. Let’s see some MSP Channel Culture Memos! https://lnkd.in/eY3y58M3 🏟️ The Dream Team: Aim to only have the highest performers, modeling yourself on a professional sports team, not a family. 😀 People over Process: Inspire and empower more than manage because employees have more impact when they’re free to make decisions about their own work. 🏎️ Uncomfortably Exciting: Thrive on change because success in business requires us to think differently, experiment and adapt (often quickly). 📈Great and Always Better: Carry a mindset of “We suck today by comparison to where we want to be in the future.” Focus on constant improvement, and the resilience needed to get there. In 2009, Netflix released a 125 page presentation on their Culture. 15 years later they still lead the way. Who will be the next trend setter? If you’re driving great culture, share it with Burnouts so we can spread the word! #IntentionalCulture #CultureMemo #Burnouts

📘 Currently reading: "No Rules Rules" by Reed Hastings and Erin Meyer. This insightful book delves into Netflix's revolutionary work culture, emphasizing freedom, responsibility, and radical honesty. As a management consultant focusing on organizational design and culture transformation, I find the principles outlined in the book align strikingly with the Fit for Future Framework. Netflix’s approach to empowering employees and fostering a culture of open communication resonates with the framework's focus on adaptability, innovation, and organizational agility. What stands out in the book is the bold dismantling of traditional hierarchies and rigid corporate policies at Netflix, replaced by a culture that values trust, transparency, and creative freedom. This approach is not just about enhancing employee engagement; it's a strategic move that drives success in the competitive entertainment industry. The insights from Netflix’s journey are particularly relevant to large government organizations and sectors like FMCG, retail, and hospitality, which are navigating today’s fast-evolving business environment. "No Rules Rules" serves as a compelling guide for those of us committed to driving culture transformation and business strategy in these dynamic sectors. As I continue reading, I'm eager to explore how these principles can be adapted and applied to the Middle Eastern context, especially within the sectors I consult in. Stay tuned for more thoughts and insights! Thank you Ahmed Alomair for introducing me to this book and for your precious gift. 🎁 #LeadershipDevelopment #OrganizationalDesign #CultureTransformation #BusinessStrategy #NoRulesRules

A culture playbook is “A set of guidelines and structured processes that outline and promote the desired culture within an organisation" and since Netflix's famous culture document 'No Rules Rules' they're becoming increasingly relevant for people professionals. But there's a reality that many organisations don't have the resources of Netflix to put into building something like this for their own business - it's okay, we didn't either! Join us 12-1pm, 4th July for an exclusive 1hr webinar follow-up to the Business Culture Awards & Business Culture Connected conference where we delve into why and how we created our own “DNA” framework & performance scorecard process. An interesting read on how Netflix builds organizational culture. Loving this quote from The Little Prince that Reed Hastings used as inspiration years ago : If you want to build a ship, don't drum up the people to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea. People over Process strikes a particular chord for me 💡as a loyal consumer of Netflix this makes me happy 😃 Main point, at Netflix they value the following: The Dream Team: We aim only to have the highest performers at Netflix, modeling ourselves on a professional sports team, not a family. People over Process: Our goal is to inspire and empower more than manage because employees have more impact when they’re free to make decisions about their own work. Uncomfortably Exciting: Netflix works best if you thrive on change because success in entertainment requires us to think differently, experiment and adapt (often quickly). Great and Always Better: We often say we suck today by comparison to where we want to be in the future. So we focus on constant improvement, and the resilience needed to get there.
Today, we published the latest iteration of the Netflix culture memo. It’s been a year in the making, with many revisions and feedback (over 1,500 comments in fact), and reflects the values and principles we think best represent Netflix today. As head of talent, I’m often asked, why do we focus on culture so much? Because we want to ensure that anyone applying for a job here knows what motivates Netflix — and that all employees have a shared understanding of what we value most.
