Trigger Warning: The following post is about suicide. Today (10 September) is World Suicide Prevention Day. “Suicide will always be a permanent solution to what can be a temporary problem”. According to the Health and Social Care Committee, four in five suicides are by men, with suicide the biggest cause of death for men under 35. This is why it is important that we start conversations about mental health so that we can address the stigma that surrounds it and ensure that everyone can get the support that they need. This is why we are encouraging our supporters, partners and followers to start conversations about mental health not just as part of your activities to mark World Suicide Prevention Day, but every day. Let’s work together to help prevent suicide through building a culture of prevention. The awareness day was established by the International Association for Suicide Prevention and co-sponsored by the World Health Organisation, to ‘raise awareness around the globe that suicide can be prevented’. We agree. This is why we advocate for building positive mental health in and through work by creating a culture of prevention. This includes, providing all workers with the knowledge, tools and confidence to not only recognise mental ill-health in themselves but also in their colleagues. Through normalising conversations about mental health, it will remove the stigma that persistently surrounds it and empower more people to seek support if/when they need it. This is a vital message: our industry must unite to 'change the narrative.' Every conversation, no matter how small, can help break the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide. 🎗️ WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY 🎗️ The construction industry is facing a mental health crisis. While workers are less likely to experience work-related stress, they are four times more likely to die by suicide. We need to promote open communication, recognise warning signs, provide resources, advocate for work-life balance, and support each other. By doing this, we can create a safer environment and prevent suicide in our industry. Remember, suicide is preventable, not inevitable. Together, we can make a difference. Please share. 🙏 #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #WSPD #MentalHealthMatters

World Suicide Prevention Day is on 10th September. Sadly, many people struggle with life's pressures and have suicidal thoughts. What can we do to make a difference? Raising awareness and normalising conversations around this subject is key. People can be fearful of discussing suicide. "What if I say the wrong thing?" "How do I respond if someone says they feel suicidal?" Having a conversation, listening and signposting people to the help they need, really can make a difference. Let's share this post from Mates in Mind and support their campaign.

Changing the Narrative on Suicide: World Prevention Suicide day 2024 World Suicide Prevention Day serves as an essential reminder of the urgent need to confront the multifaceted issue of suicide on a global scale. This year's theme, "Changing the Narrative on Suicide," invites us to reconsider our perspectives and approaches to suicide. By shifting our discourse, we can move beyond viewing suicide as a devastating endpoint and recognise it as a complex phenomenon shaped by various factors, including mental health, social dynamics, and economic conditions. Each suicide deeply impacts individuals, families and communities, making it essential to acknowledge this complexity in order to develop effective prevention strategies that resonate with the needs of all those affected. Raising awareness on mental health is central to our mission. We must actively encourage communities to "start the conversation" about mental health and suicide, while simultaneously advocating for policies that prioritise mental health, enhance access to care, and provide support for those in need. Schools, workplaces, and families should be equipped with the tools and knowledge to foster open discussions. By doing so, we can help people feel less alone and more empowered to share their struggles. Together, let's change the culture surrounding mental health so that everyone feels empowered to speak out and seek support, ensuring that no one has to suffer in silence. Through collective action and understanding, we can build a resilient community that supports one another in the journey towards wellness. #WorldPreventionSuicideDay #MentalHealth #Awareness

World Suicide Prevention Day is observed every year on September 10th, aimed at raising awareness about suicide prevention and promoting actions to reduce the global suicide rate. Organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), this day encourages people to engage in conversations, share resources, and support those struggling with mental health issues. The theme for recent years has been “Creating Hope Through Action”, emphasizing the role that communities and individuals can play in fostering hope, understanding, and support. How You Can Get Involved: 1. Talk Openly About Mental Health: Normalize conversations about mental health to reduce stigma. Create safe spaces for people to express their feelings and seek help. 2. Be Aware of Warning Signs: Be vigilant about signs of suicidal thoughts such as withdrawal, mood swings, or talking about feelings of hopelessness. Encourage those showing these signs to seek professional help. 3. Support Helplines and Organizations: Donate to or volunteer for organizations that provide mental health support and crisis intervention. 4. Share Resources on Social Media: Share crisis hotline numbers, mental health resources, and positive messages across your social platforms. 5. Check-in with Loved Ones: A simple message or call to someone can make a huge difference. Sometimes, knowing someone cares is all it takes to prevent a tragedy. - #WorldSuicidePreventionDay - #CreatingHope - #YouAreNotAlone - #MentalHealthMatters - #SupportAndHope - #BreakTheSilence - #EndTheStigma - #HopeThroughAction

🌟 Such an Important Topic to Talk About 🌟 Every year on September 10th, we observe World Suicide Prevention Day. This day shines a much-needed spotlight on the critical issue of suicide and mental health, aiming to reduce the stigma around discussing these topics and increase awareness on how we can actively work to prevent suicides. It's a day where we all, as part of a global community, come together to send a powerful message: actions can create hope, and as a collective, we can prevent suicide. Suicide is a global health issue, with over 703,000 people dying by suicide annually—equating to one person every 40 seconds (WHO). These numbers are staggering, and they remind us of the importance of breaking the silence and opening up conversations around mental health. By dedicating a day to this cause, we hope to foster conversations that lead to meaningful change. It encourages us to reach out, listen, and support those who may be struggling. Each of us can play a part in reducing these numbers through awareness and action. Today's observance reminds us of the incredible power found in hope and collective action. By coming together and speaking openly about mental health and suicide, we break down barriers and show that support is available and compassionate understanding is possible. As we mark this day, let's take concrete steps within our communities, workplaces, and social circles to promote mental well-being and offer our support to those in need. 💬 I'd love to hear your thoughts on how we can support mental health in our communities. Feel free to share your ideas or stories in the comments below. 💜 September is Suicide Prevention Month 🤍10th September is World Suicide Prevention Day 💛This years theme is "Changing the narrative on suicide" 🖤Call to Action for us all, "Start the Conversation" Its not just today that this is important but by taking the time to talk about suicide we are helping to raise awareness about the importance of reducing stigma (that does sadly exist) and encouraging open conversations to prevent suicides. "Changing the narrative" on suicide aims to shift the culture around suicide from one of silence to one of openness, understanding, and support. Every conversation is important, it helps to break down barriers, raise awareness and creates better cultures of support for those who really need it. It's definitely not easy, it's just over four years on since we lost my Godson to suicide and the conversation today is just as hard as it was at the time. I'm fortunate to have a supportive family, amazing friends & colleagues who help me when things are tough. This theme challenges us to transform how we perceive and discuss suicide, moving from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding, and support. Suicide is a deeply complex issue that affects many lives, and how we talk about it can significantly impact prevention efforts. By shifting the narrative, we can: - Reduce Stigma: Addressing and reframing our perceptions helps to dismantle the stigma that surrounds mental health struggles and suicidal thoughts. - Encourage Open Dialogue: Open conversations foster a culture of support and understanding, making it easier for individuals to seek help and share their experiences. - Promote Awareness: When we talk about suicide and mental health openly, we raise awareness and educate others about the signs and resources available. Starting the conversation is a crucial step in changing the narrative. Here’s how you can contribute: - Initiate Dialogue: Make it a point to discuss mental health and suicide prevention in your circles. Whether at home, work, or in community settings, your initiative can make a difference. - Listen and Support: Be an active listener. Offer support and show empathy to those who may be struggling. - Educate Yourself and Others: Learn about mental health and share that knowledge. Understanding the issues and available resources can empower you to support others effectively. - Advocate for Policy Change: Support and advocate for policies that prioritize mental health, increase access to care, and provide necessary support for those in need. Every conversation, no matter how small, contributes to a more supportive and understanding society. By starting these essential conversations, we can break down barriers, foster a culture of openness, and ultimately prevent suicides. Let’s commit to changing the narrative together. Let’s talk, listen, and support each other. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #ChangingTheNarrative #StartTheConversation #MentalHealthAwareness
