Employers have a duty of care to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of their employees, including mental health/stress. However, if you manage one of the 5.47mn SMEs in the UK, you will know how hard it can be to access the same resources as larger organisations. Therefore, at Mates in Mind, we have launched our new Champions Programme and are calling on medium and large sized organisations to support the small organisations and sole traders within their supply chains. Supporting supply chains to become mentally resilient is important as it benefits the employees, their employer, and the wider local community. Workers' mental health and wellbeing is as important as their physical health. Our recent member survey results highlight this recognition from OSH professionals themselves. IOSH President, Stuart Hughes notes: “OSH is about far more than just physical safety risks; it’s about managing risks to health.” Not only is this good for the workers, but it can be beneficial to businesses too. CEO Our Minds Together CIC | Founder SpeakUp Mental Health & Wellbeing | Men’s mental health & wellbeing specialist | Workplace wellbeing | MHFA instructor | ILM Leadership & Management | Lived experience
So, you’ve decided to utilise MHFAiders as part of your wellbeing strategy in your organisation. You’ve invested money in upskilling staff, put in the initial foundations for an important and much needed peer support network but you’ve not invested money or time in it since. Why? Because by having MHFAiders you think that’s enough. Your organisation has them and employees will automatically use them. MHFAiders are the knowledge holders, they’ve received the training so should be able to develop their role using their own initiative and without any guidance and support. After all, they’ve attended the training, what else do they need, right? Wrong! Your MHFAiders are stuggling to make a tangible difference without the necessary and much needed support. They’re trying to overcome the stigma and misunderstanding around mental health, encountering resistance when initiating conversations or advocating for change. They’re battling with setting boundaries, blurring the lines as to where their responsibilities start and end - necessary boundaries that safeguard you from burnout and boundaries that alleviate some of the emotional strain. They’re listening to and supporting others, but not receiving that same support themselves. If you think this sounds like your organisation send me a DM today and let’s have a conversation! I may have something for you that will help you utilise your MHFAiders to their full potential, having the maximum impact in your workplace. #mhfa #mhfaider #workplacewellbeing #support #workplaceculture

A big thank you to Jim Kelly, Safe Work NSW, for delivering our NPSN webinar -Psychosocial Safety Essentials and thank you to NPSN EAG Chair Martyn Campbell for moderating. The session was full of takeouts and action points. Key for us was the critical importance of psychosocial safety in the workplace. Jim highlighted that mental health concerns are a significant issue, affecting one in two of us at some point in our lives. Key takeaways: Moral obligation: Employers have a duty to create a safe and supportive environment for their employees' mental health. Commercial benefits: Investing in psychosocial safety can lead to improved productivity, reduced absenteeism, and a better reputation. Legal obligations: Failure to address psychosocial hazards can result in legal consequences. Action point: Conduct a thorough assessment of your workplace to identify potential psychosocial risks and implement strategies to mitigate them. #psychosocialsafety #mentalhealth #workplacewellbeing
