Today as we celebrate Women’s Day, As CEO of AGDA I want to encourage Women in Agriculture to embrace the profound connection between our souls and the soil we nurture. The connection goes beyond the physical, it is spiritual and emotional defining and shaping who we are. So today, I make a simple call to action to play our role in growing the sector : 1. Embrace your role as changemakers - Your soul, your passion, your innovation - these are the seeds of transformation and inclusive growth; 2. Nurture the soil of opportunity. Seek out and create chances for growth, for yourself and for others; 3. Cultivate networks or support. just as plants thrive in diverse ecosystems, so we thrive when we support and uplift each other; 4. Be bold in your aspirations. Dream big, for yourselves and our sector. The future of agriculture is ours to shape, 5. Remember the soul-soil connection. Your passion and the earths potential are intertwined. Nurture both and watch the magic unfold. Let us collectively cultivate a new and prosperous agricultural landscape, turning past challenges into fertile ground for future generations of women in this sector. Together, we are building a new chapter in agriculture - one of empowerment, innovation and sustainable, inclusive growth where women’s voices resonate across fields and boardrooms alike. Have a blessed Women’s Day 💐💐🌾🚜

It's a big month here at Bennetto Natural Foods co; it’s B Corp month, and today, it’s International Women’s Day. In honour of these events, I wanted to give a big shout-out to the other female founders of B Corp businesses in Aotearoa, New Zealand. I’m proud to be one of them. International Women's Day brings awareness to the unique challenges and differences women face, including gender bias and discrimination when pitching to investors, stereotypes to overcome, limited networking and access to mentors, and the struggle to balance work and home life. Despite research-based statistics showing women-owned businesses tend to outperform, they receive less funding than male-owned businesses. However, what makes it all worth it is the compassion and community-focus that women bring into business. Kiwi women of the B Corp world are making a real and important difference. For instance, Kendall Flutey of Banqer is empowering kids to be financially literate and ready for the modern world. Brianne West, co-founder of Ethique and soon-to-launch Incrediballs, is waging a one-woman war on single-use plastic bottles, while Peri. Drysdale and Gosia Piatek of Untouched World and Kowtow Clothing, respectively, are driving the change that the fashion industry needs. I'm also inspired by Latesha Randall of Raglan Food Co, who is a great mentor to me personally, along with the Chia Sisters, Chloe and Florence Van Dyke, Michele Wilson of AWWA Period care, and the founders of Hello Period™, Robyn McLean and Mary Bond, who are taking on the big boys of traditional (and environmentally harmful) period products. And then there's Gillian Boucher of sustainable footwear brand Orba Shoes – shoes that you can bury, and they'll completely biodegrade. I have two pairs and love them! There are many more amazing female founders of B Corp businesses in Aotearoa and the rest of the world. Please feel free to give them a shout-out in the comments. 🔦 Spotlight on #WomenInAg 👩🌾 👩🔬 For the next feature in this series, we spoke to Liz Shackleton, Chief Executive Officer at Animal and Plant Health NZ. Read on for her perspective on better representation in the agriculture and science sector. ➡ Q1. What do you enjoy the most about your work with CropLife Asia? We have a Māori proverb in #NewZealand, He aha te mea nui? Māku e kii atu, he tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata. What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people. This is an incredible industry to be part of because our people’s work in #science and #food enables and empowers communities to thrive. Crop Life Asia’s work strongly aligns with our vision here at Animal and Plant Health NZ, which is ‘Healthy crops and healthy animals safeguard our sustainability’. ➡ Q2. How do you think your work contributes to women’s empowerment in agriculture and science? Science and agriculture are underpinned by curiosity, diverse thought and giving things a crack. However, the reality is that many of our decision-making tables still miss out on the ideas of half the population. There’s a saying that we can’t be what we can’t see. Visible female leadership increases our representation in decision-making. We are strongly placed to act and shape traditional work models into a more flexible system that enables everyone to find the right balance. After all, if we don’t like the path we’re on, it’s up to us as leaders to forge a new one - by making a dent in the statistics one person at a time. Animal and Plant Health New Zealand is very proud to have an emerging leaders cohort within our membership, whom we engage, connect with and empower. Our female leaders have a critical role in wisdom transfer for our industry, blending old and new experiences to bring the best of both worlds to the next generation. Sharing our knowledge shows other women the opportunities available to them. Each day also brings opportunities to lift other women up, including making space for our voices at decision tables, advocating for our expertise, and providing encouragement. ➡ Q3. Why is closing the gender gap important for the agricultural sector and with crop production in particular? It’s a simple equation: Equal pay for equal work equals human rights for half the population. Being in science-based professions, we are in a prime position to enable positive change, as reviewing, reporting our results, and adjusting accordingly, is in our DNA. As leaders we can also ask the question: How do the norms of leadership effect our inclusion (or exclusion) of women? Are those norms what we want for our own daughters and granddaughters? There is already some great New Zealand research to explore solutions in this space, like the work of Dr. Amanda Sterling. Here’s a story of breaking down gender barriers in Veracruz, which accounts for nearly a quarter of Mexico’s coffee production. The bulk of the work takes place on family farms in rural indigenous regions, where men typically assume leadership roles. For generations, women like Rita have toiled behind the scenes, contributing to coffee harvesting without receiving the recognition or compensation they deserve. Today, with the support of our Equal Project with World Vision, this is starting to change. This project provides specialized training in specialty coffee production, resulting in higher quality and prices and increased family income. In collaboration with the Mexican Council of Extraordinary Coffees, Equal establishes crucial market connections for producers, ensuring fair compensation for their products. Rita's coffee now proudly bears the Zepanian logo, a specialty coffee brand that promotes the empowerment of women producers, recognizing their contribution to coffee farming. The benefits of this training extend far beyond financial gains. As household incomes rise, child labor decreases. Moreover, women coffee growers are stepping into leadership roles within their communities, creating a ripple effect that dismantles long-standing gender inequities. Check out our latest video to delve deeper into Rita's inspiring story. #InvestInWomen #IWD2024 https://lnkd.in/dvU_jvQT
