🙌 Celebrating Play It Forward Week 🧒, our annual event where we dedicate our time and resources to volunteer for various causes around the world. In Asia Pacific, our Mattel China Play Lab partnered with All Star, a local organization that provides care and education for autistic children, to create a memorable day of fun and learning. Together with our volunteers from the HK and Shenzhen offices, China Play Lab kickstarted the day with a visit to an exhibition that showcased the drawings from the autistic children at All Star. The group then visited the Mattel Playground office, where they prepared a variety of games and toys for the children to play with which included Mattel classics like Barbie and Hot Wheels as well as some team games with our colleagues. The day was full of laughter, inspiration, and friendship, as we saw the power of play in action. We're honored to collaborate with like-minded organizations to bring play to more children and will continue to uphold this philosophy to create a better and joyful world for all. Today, June 11th, marks the very first International Day of Play! Play isn't just about having fun (though that is important), it's a critical part of child development. In fact, my sister, a long time early childhood teacher, teacher, would often tell me that children's work is play. This is where they learn how to communicate, share, work collaboratively, and regulate emotions. As children grow older, they learn how to persevere, work towards goals, how to be a leader, and learn empathy. Of course, play is also good for physical health as well as emotional. However, too many children are deprived of their childhood and this fundamental aspect of their development. They don't get a chance to develop these skills and to form strong relationships with others through safe play. All children have a right to childhood and a right to safe spaces to play. On this first International Day of Play, UNICEF and UNESCO call on governments around the world to prioritize four SDG-related outcomes that contribute to this right and support progress towards SDG target (Read more here about the four actions here: https://lnkd.in/ePmVU8ZP),

Let's Celebrate! It's the first International Day of Play! June 11th, 2024 marks the very first International Day of Play, a day dedicated to celebrating the power of play in all our lives, but especially for children. Play isn't just about having a good time. It's fundamental to a child's development. Play heals through learning, life skills and psychosocial well-being. That’s why there must be investment into diverse, inclusive and safe play spaces, extending access to all, especially the most vulnerable and marginalised children. Through play, children: · Learn and grow intellectually · Build social skills and make friends · Develop resilience and emotional well-being · Explore their creativity and imagination · Stay healthy and active What can we do: ü Organize a game day in your neighborhood park or backyard. ü Talk to friends, family, and educators about the importance of play in children's lives. ü Use social media to create awareness towards the benefit of play for children. #We want a world where every child’s right to play is respected, protected and fulfilled.

Today, (7th August) marks National Play Day 2024 celebrating children’s right to play. This year’s theme is ‘the culture of childhood’, a very apt theme for the current ongoing push to the government for more play opportunities across England. Play England, co-organisers of Play Day, are urging the government for a larger play budget and strategy in order to improve childhoods. Many towns and cities are severely lacking play opportunities leading children to turn towards indoor activities, technology and consequently solitude. Play, as well as just being fun, encourages children to form friendships, communicate, take risks, step out of their comfort zone, get creative, explore and so much more. These are all vital parts of development and we need to ensure that children are still able to get that kind of exposure in an increasingly digital world. Take a read of the following open letters to government by Play England and Association of Play Industries (API), advocating for more thought towards play. Make the most of 'Play Day' 2024 and get involved by engaging in playful activities! #playday #playengland #api #playopportunities #timberplay #outdoorplaygrounds #nationalplaystrategies

When children play, the world wins. Today marks the inaugural #InternationalDayOfPlay— a day we can all make play a priority for children around the world. The International Day of Play creates a unifying moment to elevate the importance of play as central to children’s learning and well-being — ensuring time to play, space to play, and support for quality play is prioritized. To make this change, we must: INVEST in children’s well-being by protecting their right to play. PROVIDE children with more time and opportunities to play, including in school. PROTECT their right to play by creating safe and accessible places to play, including those with special needs. RESPECT their rights to be heard in decisions impacting their right to play. SUPPORT them in developing social skills through play. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dWMxentj

https://lnkd.in/erkwiVZn Today is the International Day of Play. A day to celebrate play and remind ourselves that, at our core, we are playful beings. Playing is a creative process in which we create a "possibility space" by embracing and incorporating limitations and challenges into a dynamic and playful worldview. It’s about not always trying to control the situation but accepting an uncertain course and outcome. Here are two examples. “We don’t stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing.” – George Bernard Shaw. Children who play make-believe transform their environment into a natural part of their game. Two chairs become a train. If a well-meaning parent rationally removes the unnecessary elements and sets the rules in black and white, the play might die, and the magic will disappear. “Playing a game is the voluntary attempt to overcome unnecessary obstacles.” – Bernard Suits. In play, we challenge ourselves to improve by deliberately and voluntarily placing ourselves in vulnerable positions or imposing impossible rules. The uncontrolled experience that arises from this is not called 'stress' in the safe context of play but 'fun.' This is why soccer players become so skilled at manipulating a leather ball with their feet. The rule is not to touch the ball with their hands. Making things hard can be fun. Some last thoughts: How will this change in an era where AI increasingly serves everything on a silver platter? Are we becoming lazy? How do we continue to stimulate our brains with new challenges? How do we seek out the struggle that leads to creative thoughts and new neural connections? Challenge yourself. Let go of assumptions. Fantasize. Take a different path than you normally would. Make up your own rules. Stay playful. #InternationalDayOfPlay #HomoLudens #seriousgames #gamification

What are the benefits of themed play? 🧐🧠 One of the best things about children is their imagination and sense of wonder. In these early stages of life, children are naturally imaginative and this is something that if encouraged, can help them grow into happy, confident, inspired, and engaged adults. Get ready to mark your calendars because June 11, 2024, is about to become the most playful day of the year! It's the very first International Day of Play! Did you know that even though the UN declared play a fundamental right for children back in 1989, only 30% of adults seem to know about it? Well, it's high time we remind everyone about the magic of play! That's where The LEGO Group and the LEGO Foundation come in, along with some other awesome people! They're leading the charge, saying how play can totally change lives and help children reach their full potential. They've even been hosting their own World Play Day for a couple of years now. But it's not just about LEGO. Everyone from the International Rescue Committee to Right to Play International is joining in. They're all saying the same thing: play is super important for learning and growing. Even though millions of children are missing out on playtime, we can still make a difference. Play isn't just fun; it's a game-changer for confidence, creativity, and building a brighter future. So, let's spread the word and get ready to party on June 11th! It's time to celebrate the power of play and ensure every child gets to shine. Who's with us at ORT SA CAPE?
