#ICYMI: Another catch-up item from my summer reading frenzy, the Conference Board's 2024 Innovation Report Card. Highlights pro-competitive policy reform as one of the "pivotal areas of opportunity" to drive greater innovation and investment in Canada. 💡 "Canada has experienced 𝐚 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐩 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐑&𝐃 over the past 20 years. Neither the Canadian government nor businesses have been able to reverse this trend. This is likely due to multiple, interdependent factors such as 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻; industry composition; lack of investment capital; current mix of government programs; complacency; and risk aversion." 💡 "To create the conditions to turn the corner (...) 5. 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Adopt 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 to inject a competitive spirit within the business ecosystem for new entrants 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐮𝐩 𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧." The Greater Copenhagen Region is the best destination for international businesses. 🙌 We don’t say that (well, we do too) – but the Global Opportunity Index confirmed it. Yes, you read that right. Denmark ranks #1 and Sweden ranks #2 in attracting foreign investment. 😱 The index compares the five most important factors for international expansion across all countries: business perception, economic fundamentals, financial services, and institutional framework. While both countries scored high across all factors Denmark achieved an exceptionally good result in business perception while Sweden reached a high ranking in economic fundamentals. 💸 Want to know more about doing business in the region? Last Wednesday, 9 October, our Director, Roberta Dall'Olio, participated as a panellist in a session titled Boosting Business in Regions, held as part of the European Week of #Regions and Cities. This session fell under the theme of #competitiveness and convergence. To remain competitive both within and outside the EU, companies must use their resources efficiently. Economists refer to this as productivity—using resources intelligently to achieve more with less. However, not all regions are equally productive; in fact, developed regions are, on average, 60% more productive than less developed regions. During the discussion, Roberta addressed this topic alongside Alexander Lembcke, who outlined the key factors for boosting regional business from an economic perspective, and Jorge Durán Laguna, who explained the European Commission’s efforts to support innovation and improve access to finance for businesses in these areas. Roberta emphasised the crucial role played by Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) in bridging regional productivity gaps. She noted that RDAs, together with regional governments, can unite local stakeholders, ensuring strong connections within the regional ecosystem. A special thanks to the great moderator of the session Alexandra Rusu, PhD from OECD - OCDE

The European Commission’s new Annual Single Market and Competitiveness Report covers #EU competitiveness drivers and has indicated that overall single market integration is trending in a positive direction. However, the report also highlights how EU global exports have decreased and public investment in key infrastructure like digital connectivity has remained stagnant. In a new blog, ITI Director General for Europe Guido Lobrano makes the case for a fully integrated Single Market and Digital Single Market. Building on recommendations outlined in ITI’s recent Vision 2030 policy guide, Guido calls on EU policymakers to: ✔️Incorporate “competitiveness checks” into regulatory compliance initiatives; ✔️Avoid fragmentation created by national laws and regulations that increase complexity and add new operational and legal costs to firms operating in the EU; ✔️Strengthen the digital skills of the EU’s present and future workforce; and ✔️Advance opportunities for the EU to ensure its values and interests are protected while supporting its global competitiveness and enhancing international leadership. Learn more about Guido's recommendations for enhancing Europe's competitiveness and innovation in his latest #TechWonk blog. Read now: https://lnkd.in/ePH-65iP #EUpolicy #Competitiveness
