"𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝟏𝟎𝟎% 𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭,"Harris says, "because there is a human element involved in the equation." When you ask one single person to assess another's performance and assign a performance rating (which most companies do), you have a 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐰𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦. Why? Because we’re human. We often perceive the same exact thing in different ways. 𝐄𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧. I see one picture. You see another. We're both right. Bring managers together to discuss, compare and contrast proposed employee performance ratings with other leaders. ... to define similar 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬, ... to reduce 𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐛𝐢𝐚𝐬, ... to reveal potential 𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐬, ... and to 𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 of “tough” or “easy” graders. Let all voices speak. Welcome debate. Be open to different perspectives. Even then, you may not achieve pure meritocracy.
