Primark is an Irish-based chain known for its strategic brilliance and low-cost corporate culture. The parent company of Primark is Associated British Foods, a $25 billion public company with operations in 55 countries. Primark has been expanding in the U.S. market since 2015 and currently has 27 stores, with plans to reach 60 by 2026. The company follows a fast-fashion model with a focus on everyday low prices and no advertising or marketing gimmicks. Primark offers a wide range of products at very affordable prices, including licensed goods from popular properties like Disney and Marvel. While Primark has sustainability initiatives, it faces criticism for its disposable product model. Despite having fewer stores compared to major retailers, Primark's expansion plans and strategic approach make it a serious player in the specialty store space. European retailers that have successfully entered the U.S. market started slowly and ramped up expansion, which is a strategy Primark seems to be following. Bravo to Asda, for using clever branding psychology to help give it a fresh lick of paint! It proves you don't need a major overhaul to make a big impact, and reminds us that branding is always evolving. By keeping its iconic green, but adding a new darker shade, the rebrand signals a refresh after the company become UK-owned again for the first time in 20 years. With the new colours and subtly-curved font, the supermarket is aiming for new branding that is: 1. Modern, yet maintains the heritage 2. Chattier - reflecting the nature of the owners, who are based in the 'friendlier' and more humorous north of England 3. Accessible (though we do question the mixing of lower and uppercase letters.) 'Bolder. Fresher. Chattier.' I love that Asda values having a friendly, relatable tone. They're recognising just how POWERFUL their brand voice is. Somewhere around late 2022, I saw signals that Abercrombie & Fitch Co. was "back". I hadn't seen any paid marketing but, through word of mouth and earned media, the brand kept catching my eye. I'd compliment a woman on the jeans she was wearing - Abercrombie Top 10 lists of jeans in fashion and culture pubs - Abercrombie Tik Tok info from my daughter - Abercrombie I was thrilled to learn, from this article, just how purposefully those impressions made it into my headspace. This article reads like a master class in retail, and brand turnaround and growth. With key lessons in... 🌀 Pivoting - The new executive team was honest with a themselves about the brand's fall from grace and why. 🎧 Listening - The strategy responsible for the incredible turnaround, created and steered by CMO Carey Collins Krug (she/her), was all about listening to the customer in a robust way. The results of that listening went beyond marketing. Delving deeply into their targets' lives "unlocked alot of opportunities" from multiple perspectives - brand, store, assortment. 🤝Collaboration - Members of the Product team, led by Corey Robinson, are embedded in the Marketing team so the brand can go quickly to marketing new products. 🎯 Execution - Retail is detail. CEO Fran Horowitz says in the article, “There is no silver bullet." “It has been about…executing a focused playbook every single day,". When Primark was plotting its US entry in 2014, among the first people the Dublin, Ireland-based retailer hired was a head of human resources. The company went with Susan Hoffman, a 30-year veteran in the field, mostly at PepsiCo and BJ’s Wholesale, to head up what’s known internally as the people and culture team. In the US, that title carried extra weight: Hoffman was tasked with helping a leader brought in from Dublin navigate the “geographically complex” and “incredibly diverse” US market, said John Hadeed, who succeeded Hoffman in the role after she retired in 2021. “Those first hires have to be rooted in what’s critical to running the business and understanding the local market,” he said. “We want to show up as Primark in the US, we don’t want to show up as some American version of Primark.” Primark is one of a growing number of European and Asian retailers in the midst of major US rollouts. The Irish retailer opened roughly a dozen stores there last year, with plans to reach 60 locations by 2026. Spain’s Zara and Mango and Japan’s Uniqlo are also expanding their footprint; the latter is doubling its North American store count with 20 new locations this year. The US is the biggest apparel market, and its consumers have proven more resilient than in other major economies. But breaking through is hard; what works in a retailer’s home country doesn’t always translate to an American audience. For every H&M or Zara, which have operated successfully in the country for decades, there’s many more Uniqlos, which have needed multiple attempts to build their US business.
