For the experts out there: how would you define “autophagy”? 1. Autophagy is the lysosomal/vacuolar degradation of cells-own material (De Duve, 1963) or 2. Autophagy is a lysosomal degradation pathway in which cytoplasmic material is sequestered within double membrane autophagosomes (recent literature)? No doubt for me: I stay with De Duve. Macro-autophagy is not a synonym of autophagy, is one of the possible pathways that ensures autophagy.

3moThis is accurate. Autophagy is rather a broad term defining a standard cellular degradation and recycling pathway. Tuning it down to explain only macro autophagy is a reductionist approach that is definitely helpful in explaining many concepts but we must clearly realise that autophagy is so much more than just that. Let's have an open mind and explore beyond that.
