This week’s #ChemSciPicks is a fantastic Edge article by Maike Lundahl et al. (University of Washington, USA), titled: ‘Exploring the influence of H-bonding and ligand constraints on thiolate ligated non-heme iron mediated dioxygen activation’. In this manuscript, Maike Lundahl et al. quantitatively examine the formation of a well-characterized, reactive, O2-derived thiolate ligated FeIII-superoxo using low-temperature stopped-flow kinetics. The reported kinetic results afford an experimentally determined reaction coordinate that illustrates the influence of H-bonding and ligand constraints on the kinetic barrier to dioxygen activation, an essential step in biosynthetic pathways critical to life. Shining light on a carbon nitride thin film generates net charge. By adsorbing ionic surfactants, directs chemical gradients - measured with droplet manipulation. My last doctoral work with Lukas Zeininger at MPICI, in collaboration with Dr. Paolo Giusto, read more about it in JACS: https://lnkd.in/eeDwekmU Janus droplets characteristically reconfigure, move, and tilt in response to chemical concentration changes, or chemical/thermal gradients. By shining a spot of ultraviolet light on the carbon nitride, we can direct adsorption of ionic surfactants. This is sufficient to generate Marangoni flows, and move droplets, which we use to measure molecule adsorption, desorption, and understand molecule charge selectivity, gradient type, and direction.

For the experts out there: how would you define “autophagy”? 1. Autophagy is the lysosomal/vacuolar degradation of cells-own material (De Duve, 1963) or 2. Autophagy is a lysosomal degradation pathway in which cytoplasmic material is sequestered within double membrane autophagosomes (recent literature)? No doubt for me: I stay with De Duve. Macro-autophagy is not a synonym of autophagy, is one of the possible pathways that ensures autophagy.

Unlocking the Power of Solvent Selection: Influence on Solubility, Nucleation and Crystal Habit of Ascorbic Acid Free Webinar time again! This time the speaker is my colleague Jyoti Yadav from our Applications team, and she is presenting her own research. Solvent choice plays a critical role in solution crystallization, affecting thermodynamic properties, kinetic parameters, and final crystal attributes. This experimental work focuses on the effect of various binary solvent systems of water-alcohols (methanol/ethanol/isopropanol) on the crystallization of Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) in terms of solubility, nucleation rate, and crystal habit. Adding alcohols in binary solvent systems reduces the solubility, increases critical Gibbs free energy for nucleation, and transforms the crystal shape into elongated rod-shaped crystals. Physicochemical parameters such as pKa, LogP, and aqueous solubility can be tuned with the introduction of the gem-difluorinated group in cycloalkanes derivatives. On the other hand, the “tethering” of C-3 and C-5 atoms in cyclic structure can lead to a considerable decrease in the pKa values. Super proud moment, my first (first) author publication of my PhD! 📚 In this study, we expanded on prior work within our group leveraging C,O-bidentate ligands featuring a triazolylidene-phenolate core for intramolecular C–H amination. By varying the steric bulk of the wingtip substituents in the ligand, we were enable to enhance the selectivity of the reaction to essentially quantitative.
