Fantastic to see Connect iT winning at #Cabsat yesterday! What is it? A greatly simplified deployment for managing live media flows over the internet and cloud (SRT/RIST etc) #netinsight#media#workflow

Last weekend I had the privilege to once again be invited to the Connecting the Dots Summit on the Summit organised by the master dot connector himself Andreas Waltenspiel. Some say it is the Davos of media tech, but where the attendees actually go skiing and have a lot more fun.
It does have representatives from the operator and vendor communities, with a few consultants thrown in for good measure, drawn from across eight European countries. Leading to insightful conversations, mainly about the quality of the snow but occasionally about the industry.
My industry takeaway from the event were:
1. The operators are all working on multicast ABR but they are all working on different specifications (such as BT Maud – see my previous article on this https://lnkd.in/etNMeHXB). This clearly indicates that there is a strong demand for MABR but that the standardisation to date has not meet the operators’ needs and more work is required to ensure we have interoperability across the industry.
2. The fragmentation we see with TV applications is not meeting the demand of consumers. While operators want to offer consumers universal search and integrated playlist and common continue watching, the content providers are not willing to support these. Preferring to keep their silos.
This fragmentation is also impacting advertising, with advertisers struggling to track frequency and reach across apps.
3. Most businesses seem to be in continuous transformation, largely driven by business looking for economies through mergers and acquisitions. Though often the economies and being sought years after the mergers took place. But everyone is having to reacting the changes in the economics of the industry.
My physical takeaway from the event was some Swiss chocolate curtesy of Roger Pitton – much appreciated.

Today at NAB Show we announced the launch of Broadspan, a datacasting platform to enable data distribution capability across all current Sinclair NextGen Broadcast (ATSC 3.0) markets where it serves as the host station.
Edgio, Inc., a leading content delivery network, will become the first go-to-market collaborator of the Broadspan datacasting platform.
This marks an exciting step forward for broadcasters and consumers, and begins to fulfill the promise of digital convergence offered by ATSC 3.0. It opens the door to multiple new business opportunities for broadcasters and greatly enhanced efficiency for data distribution.
