Valerio Lupi, a postdoctoral researcher in Mathematics at the GSSI, was awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship for his research project STETHOS (Stability and transition in extracorporeal blood flow devices: understanding flow-induced hemolysis and thrombogenesis). STETHOS, funded with nearly 180.000 euros for two years, aims to apply computational fluid dynamics to solve medical issues in blood treatment. Specifically, the blood flow in extracorporeal medical devices is exposed to non-physiological conditions, which may lead to red blood cell damage and clot formation. Several drug therapies are provided to patients to prevent these phenomena, but they all come with side effects. “Understanding the causes of flow-induced hemolysis and thrombogenesis would reduce the need for medical therapies, thus enhancing the well-being of the patients”, Lupi explains. I'm thrilled to share that my better half, Tasfia Siam, a medical doctor, and I, a researcher in the biomedical field, have fulfilled a shared dream - co-authoring a research article. Choosing a topic that blended our expertise was the first challenge. The second was conducting original research on a shoestring budget. Our solution? A computer simulation-based study of a medical case, marrying my research background with Siam's medical insights. I'm delighted to announce the publication of our journal article, "Analysis of Blood Flow in Human Brain Vessels for Newtonian and Non-Newtonian Blood Properties," in the open-access peer-reviewed journal "CFD Letters". We then conducted blood flow simulations within this model, aiming to study hemodynamic parameters (velocity and pressure) within the arterial system, providing valuable insights into the causes and cures of cerebral aneurysms.

120 MILLION TO RESEARCH. Solid basic research is the bedrock of innovations in Life Science, and new innovations strengthen the Life Science industry in Umeå. Now, the Faculty of Science and Technology (Teknik och naturvetenskap vid Umeå universitet) and the Faculty of Medicine at Umeå University have been awarded 120 million SEK by, Vetenskapsrådet / Swedish Research Council.   Nearly 65 million SEK is allocated to medical research, including 12.6 million SEK for "Research Competence in Primary Care" and 55.7 million SEK is granted to 14 research projects in natural and technical sciences.   Among the researchers who have received funding, Marene Landstrom, Sjoerd Wanrooij, Jörgen Johansson, and Mikael Elofsson have all contributed to UBI and the innovation system through their research – perhaps these 120 million SEK in grants could lead to new innovations from some of the researchers.   Congratulations from UBI to all researchers to whom the Swedish Research Council has granted funding!👏👏👏 Read about the funding for the Faculty of Science and Technology: https://lnkd.in/di4bxMZR Medical research: https://lnkd.in/dUJngS_z #umeåmerlifescience

The 10th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Systems (ICBES'23) of International ASET inc. was an incredible and rewarding experience! I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this event, which has become the leading annual conference in the fields related to biomedical engineering and systems. It provided a unique opportunity to bring together scholars from around the world, present advances in relevant fields, and foster an enriching environment for the exchange of ideas and information. During ICBES 2023, I had the privilege of sharing my expertise in the field of biomedical engineering by presenting my paper titled "COMPARISON OF MANUAL AND SEMIAUTOMATIC VOLUME OF INTEREST DRAWING FOR THE ANALYSIS OF SPINAL CORD MYELIN PET IMAGING." ERC Proof of Concept Grant for Tom de Greef 👏   Today, the European Research Council (ERC) announces the award of the Proof of Concept grants. The grants help researchers to bridge the gap between the discoveries stemming from their frontier research and the practical application of the findings, including early phases of their commercialization. Tom de Greef, Full Professor of Synthetic Biology at the department of Biomedical Engineering receives the grant for his research project 'DNA Encryption of Compartmentalized DNA Files', in which he will investigate molecular encryption of digital data stored on DNA. 🧬 As he received two previous ERC grants for his research, this top-up #ERCPoC grant helps to explore the commercial and societal potential of the findings. Associate Professor Ruud Van Sloun also received the Proof of Concept grant for his research on Cloud-native ultrasound imaging at the department of Electrical Engineering (EE) at TU/e. This pioneering work, originating from her intellectual insights and scientific contributions, has not only revolutionised the field of medicine but also enabled the rapid development of new types of vaccines against COVID-19. The pandemic itself, which has had a profound impact on the world, including global healthcare and economies, was significantly addressed through the application of mRNA-based vaccines. Her achievement underscores how great events, such as the global response to a pandemic, are indeed rooted in the intellectual realm.   Ferenc Krausz, along with his colleagues Pierre Agostini and Anne L’Huillier, received the Nobel Prize in Physics for their innovative experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light. Their work allows for the study of electron dynamics in matter at an extremely minute timescale. This not only provides fundamental insights into the behaviour of electrons in atoms, molecules and solids but could also help to develop electronic components more quickly. In the long run, such scientific discoveries offer numerous application possibilities, for example, for faster and more powerful electronics and for medical screening procedures for the early detection of diseases.   These Nobel Prize winners exemplify how intellectual pursuits and scientific breakthroughs can have far-reaching implications, whether by addressing global health crises or advancing our understanding of the fundamental forces that govern the universe.
