May is Mining Month in British Columbia! Looking back though to mid-April when the federal budget was announced. The federal government is aiming to speed up the development of new mining projects and has introduced initiatives in the 2024 budget to streamline the permitting and impact assessment processes, as well as lower barriers for Indigenous communities to participate in resource projects. However, some industry experts feel some of these changes will have negative unintended consequences for the mineral exploration sector here in Canada, for example those related to capital gains.

Mining companies need to tell their stories and to do that they need to measure their real impact, good or bad. They also need to be transparent.  According to George Arhin, PwC Ghana and West Africa Mining Leader the world’s top mining companies are helping to feed widespread global communities while lighting the way to a low-carbon future and providing materials for infrastructure development and consumer demand. “They are a force for good and to tell their story, mining companies need to measure their impact, both the good and bad,” says Arthin.
