As Foreign Secretary David Lammy set out, action on the climate and nature crisis will be central to all that the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office does. We are delighted the UK Government has appointed its first-ever Special Representative for Nature, Ruth Davis OBE! Ruth Davis is one of the UK’s leading environmental policy experts, with over 25 years of experience working on issues of nature recovery and climate change. This is a joint role between the FCDO and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and she will report to both the Environment Secretary and the Foreign Secretary. Ruth will be on the ground for #COP16, the first #Biodiversity COP since the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework at COP 15 in December 2022 in Montreal, Canada. Two years ago in Montreal, nearly 200 countries signed a landmark agreement to reverse the loss of nature by the end of the decade and raise $700 billion a year to achieve that goal. Over the next two weeks, countries will be meeting to check in on their progress— we are pleased we have Ruth Davis to help deliver our commitment of protecting 30 per cent of land and water by 2030.

"The urgency on climate change has become clearer, but the opportunities have become clearer too." Words spoken by SoS for Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Milliband, during his video remarks at Canada's Annual Climate Change Conference yesterday: "The Net Zero Edge: Navigating the New Realities for Canadian Competitiveness". The summit draws in speakers and participants across government, industry and third-sector stakeholders. Along with remarks from SoS Ed Milliband, we were pleased to receive video remarks from Chris Stark, heading up Mission Control and to have remarks in-person from Sir Alok Sharma KCMG, COP26 President. Lord Sharma referred to the urgency of acting now and not adapting sufficiently will only lead to greater costs in years to come. He concluded by stating regardless of political ideology it is in our economic interest to act, and without political consensus it is difficult to unlock the crucial private investment we need to reach our net zero goals. We are pleased that today the UK Government welcomes up to £24 billion of private investment for pioneering energy projects ahead of the International Investment Summit on 14th October.

Ever wondered what the Canadian Science and Innovation (SIN) team gets up to? This year has been full of excitement for the team. From boarding a Royal Navy ship to seeing the UK’s most powerful supercomputer, the team has covered a lot of ground! The SIN team organised a one-week expedition for a select group of British and Canadian early-career researchers to travel on board HMS Protector, the Royal Navy’s ice patrol ship. With limited opportunities for graduate students to get involved in ship-based field research, this trip provided an opportunity to get a taste of life at sea on board an ice capable vessel. https://lnkd.in/eHgc2FqE Following this expedition, the SIN team organized a mission to the UK to deepen collaboration in the field of AI compute and gain insights into the UK’s supercomputing landscape. This followed Canada and the UK having emerged as leading players in AI, with a shared vision to harness the potential of AI for the benefit of society, and an MOU signed earlier this year by the UK and Canadian governments, establishing a cooperative framework for future collaboration in AI compute. https://lnkd.in/eSFX2XFg
